Hyde park is a historic town in Dutchess County New York.  It lies between  two other historic towns, Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck.

Every year this town attracts many tourists.  It is known world wide because this is the home of the FDR presidential library.  President Franklin Roosevelt was the first president to make arrangements for his papers to be preserved in an organized way.  The 16 acre site was donated by his family and he was instrumental in the design of the building which was completed in 1940.

There are many other sites to vist while you are in Hyde Park. I have included  pictures of some of the sites of interest.

VANDERBILT MANSION  This wonderful estate which lies on the banks of the majestic Hudson was the country home of Federick Vanderbilt, brother of the Newport and North Carolina Vanderbilts. (The Breakers and Biltmore Estates)

This estate is an example of a "Guilded Age" estate. Like its Newport, Rhode Island counterpart, it is open for tours.  Once you have seen the house there are also beautiful gardens to appreciate- then walk along the Hudson River and just imagine how grand this site must have appeared to Henry Hudson.  In the distance the majestic Catskills adds to the grand view.

CULINARY INSTITUTE OF AMERICA: This former Jesuit seminary was transformed into the CIA in 1972 and many great chefs have passed through its doors.  Because of this wonderful institution many fine restaurants can be found in the area.

FDR LIBRARY: Established in 1940, it houses FDR's presidential papers. You can tour the library as well as the FDR home next door.  You can then visit Eleanor's nearby country cottage called Val-kill.

One of the many interesting buildings found in this historic town.

HYDE PARK FREE LIBRARY

HYDE PARK POST OFFICE: The post office was established in 1812. The current building was constructed during the depression and contains important WPA artist murals.

CRANBERRIES AT TILLEY HALL:  This building was renovated in the last few years and houses Cranberries, a coffeeshop/deli.

Great pictures Jennifer.  Your post made me homesick, where's home?  Boston and your picture reminded me of the nostalgia of an older city.

George: The Breaker is larger, this mansion has its own charm, the garden are beautiful and you have the river and mountain.  These mansions are alway close to a body of water and I suspect it was not just for the scenery but more for mode of transportation.

Ava:  I can understand you missing Boston, I really love going there.  I love the market, discovering a new food from some other part of the world is of interest to me, the problem is my husband hates the market; too many people.  I also dragged him to the Pike's Market in Seattle, after all I spent hours at the Music Experiment.

Laurie: Thank you for the kind comment, I had fun taking the shots and writing the post.  I learned something new tonight,I did not know there were featured post on Localism.

Jennifer,  I never told members when I gave them a localism featured, but it has been brought to my attention that most of our membership didn't know.  So I am telling people now, lol.   There are some extra points involved also, about 100 or so, not certain how many, but there are only 8 slots so we only feature really wonderful and informative pieces there.

Instead of "On The Road with Charles Kuralt", it's "On the Road with Jennifer Fivelsdal".

One of the great benefits of the Hudson Valley is that if you have a long ride home and get creative you can turn a commute into sight seeing for alittle while. I call them little vacations. A visit to your blog is a little vacation at times.

Great photo.
