7 ways COVID-19 is changing how we design and live in our homes
Since the coronavirus outbreak began a lot of families are thinking about what we want in our homes and how we can adjust our spaces to be more productive for our families. Here are seven design changes that are popular and may stay around after the pandemic:
- Larger home office spaces. Many homeowners will want larger, more defined workspaces as opposed to temporary desk setups. Those living in smaller spaces will want multifunctional pieces like drop-down desks or stylish office furniture that doubles as decor to help blend a work station into another room more seamlessly.
- Defined entryways and mudrooms. Trips outside can potentially bring germs inside, so entryways are a place to safely transition, by removing face masks, shoes, coats, etc., and putting down packages.
- Private spaces. Many families that are together at home a lot are trying to carve out semi-private spaces to maintain productivity—and sanity! These spaces might be separate kids' bedrooms, designated reading nooks, and layouts with distinct spaces rather than open floor plans.
- Well-designed kitchens and storage. People are cooking more at home, so how we buy, organize, and store food is becoming more important. Orderly kitchen storage, larger pantries, and specialty appliances (like bread machines and coffee machines) will be more prevalent.
- Hygienic surfaces. Easy-to-clean hard surfaces, like glazed ceramic tile, and naturally antibacterial surfaces like copper and brass materials help limit the spread of germs. No-touch technology in faucets and doorbells and increased home automation can also help reduce germs on frequently touched surfaces.
- More entertaining. In warmer weather, backyard barbecues and patio gatherings are a relatively safe way to enjoy the company of others in a private setting.
-
New shopping habits. As people spend more time at home, furnishings that are both high quality and beautiful will be increasingly important. Local shopping for furnishings may be a more dependable source as well as support the local economy.
