AAA is predicting a decline in holiday travel this month of at least 29% compared to a year ago, due to public health concerns related to COVID-19.

Still, the agency said as many as 84.5 million Americans may travel between Dec. 23 and Jan. 3, the vast majority by car.

Jim Garrity, a spokesman for AAA’s East Central region, said many Americans probably won’t make a final decision about whether to travel until later next week. “Travel this year has been so wait and see,” he said. “I think we’ll have a lot of people who may get up the day before and decide whether or not they’re comfortable with it.”
