kermit          green

Kermit sure had it right - it DEFINITELY is not easy being "green", especially in a career  that requires marketing (translation: lots and lots of paper), driving (translation: showings, fuel consumption), electronic tools (translation: computers, cell phones, PDA's).  So as an admittedly un-green realtor, what can I do, both personally and professionally, embarrassedto color me green?

I'll be honest - I am not "green".  Heck, I'm not even in the color spectrum of green, or olive, or pea soup.  But I admit it - it is time.  So this is a great chance to do a little research and see what simple steps I can take, without turning everyday life upside down.

mailStep 1: take a look around the house. See all the mail piled up on the table? Get off the mailing list of every credit card company out there!  I don't know about you, but the amount of paper that enters my house on a daily basis is substantial.  Here is a link you can visit to get off the mailing lists: https://www.dmaconsumers.org/cgi/offmailing .  Take a minute to read through the page - there is a lot of useful information there that you can implement.  And don't forget folks - we are guilty of contributing to that mass of paper.  I know I am....so a take a careful look and review your mailing list.  I can't tell you how many other agents send me Just Listed flyers - or a free CMA coupon.  Newsflash:  I can do my own market analysis, thank you anyway!

Step 2: think about composting.  I used to get annoyed when my husband would set up a little bucket on the bananakitchen counter and start tossing things in.  He had the right idea - but the bad thing was, he just didn't research it.  He figured a few days, take it out to the bin he built outside - well, think about it - ugh, it would start to smell! Obviously, it comes down to not being lazy.  A smaller container, one that is taken to a bin daily would make more sense. Composting is an important step - but for reasons different than I originally thought.  Here's what I found out at this link: http://www.resourceconservation.mb.ca/cap/why.html .  It states that over 35% of household waste is compostable! That number is extraordinary!  I always thought one should compost to enrich the soil for a garden, and that was the main redeeming value of it.  The truth of the matter is, one of the biggest benefits is that composting saves in the cost of transporting of our waste materials to the dump!

trash

Step 3: How many cell phones have you gone through in the last few years?  Think  about it - I know I have at least 3 buried in a drawer, and am not sure what to do with them.  Here's a statistic that the EPA came up with in 2005: over 700 million cell phones went out of use that year, which adds up to about well over 65 tons of garbage alone.  And that was then - I didn't find a more current stat, but am sure it is well over that number. (visit this link for more information: http://www.eco-cell.org/cellwaste.asp#scope ) So what to do?  A quick visit to Google provides various methods to put those cell phones to good use.  One example is at http://www.charitablerecycling.com/CR/home.asp . I guess that is one step I can do immediately!

map4: Plan well for showings.  Thank goodness for Google Maps and Mapquest!  A logistical, well-planned route is key - not just for your sanity, but if you are one of the many real estate agents driving an SUV, gas mileage as a tax-write off needs to take a back-seat to being green.  I traded mine in for a Matrix, and wish I had taken it one step further for a Prius!  But 33 miles to the gallon - I can at least feel good about that.

There are earthso many other things we can do, and we need to do.  Stewardship of this planet we call home is in our hands.  I, for one, have been lazy, and that is no excuse.  So - a few bins in my garage taking up space- so what? A few phone calls to the right companies, and my paper waste will diminish as well as my electronic waste. Just a few steps along the path to "green", but important steps that will add up if most of us do the same.  Good luck, and maybe we can get Kermit to change his tune and sing that it's EASY to be green.

Liz, You are correct it does take some planning to be green. And by the way, cell phone to the battered womens shelter. They use them only for 911 calls which can be made from any cell with a charged battery whether activated or not. Go ahead and put 'green awarness' in your tag lines for the contest.

Liz, congratulations on your first post...and a mighty good one at that!  I like the Kermit idea...very cute.  Point number 1 is so important and so easy to do, I used to receive piles and piles of catalogs alone (some companies sent me 2 of each because they had misspelled my name at some time).  The other thing that helps is to eliminate paper bills - a lot of us pay on-line anyways, most companies will stop sending the paper bill.  I also give our old cell phones to the battered womens shelter, I've also heard there's an organization that gives them to the elderly for the same 911 purpose.  Welcome to Active Rain and keep up the good work!

Nice post Liz.

Humans can DO so much, but the rhetoric outperforms the actions in most cases.

We (humans) do tend to only think of 'the other guy' when it comes to the environment.  This industry we are in wastes bizzions of tons of paper. From Realtor mailings to Lender papers...packages are printed changed, shredded and new packages are printed...copies galore.....etc.....

And remember, when we are blogging - we are using energy as our puters are fired up. Is each word necessary? Hhhhhhmmmm.... methinks not, but heck - I'm one of those guys that thinks holiday decorations(see Christmas lights), though low wattage, are a hugh waste of valuable energy.

Liz, keep up the fight.

A well reasoned and stated arguement for conservation but.... As in anything moderation is the key.  Want to lose weigh, then push back from the table when you remain just a tad hungry... don't eat that piece of cheese cake.... Want to conserve fuel, walk more or ride your bike for those short hops....there are all sorts of intelligent ways to conserve that don't require major sacrific just common sense which all too many folks lack...even realtors!

Liz- well written post. I know I could do better in my small world too. Busy is a convenient excuse.

My sincere apologies for also using the word "Kermit" in my green blog entry. I am hopeful that readers will click to figure out how our blogs differ. If you would like me to change my blog title, I'd be happy to.

Doggonit!  Here we go again.  I am tired about people worrying about this nonsense about being green.  That said, biodiesel, which I would like to use, but the manufacturer of my truck says not to use more that 5% biodiesel. is only 10% as toxic as regular diesel when burned.  It either smells like the restaurant that you got the cooking oil from, or like popcorn if you use unused soy oil when you drive.  As soon as the manufacturer of my vehicle makes one that will run on biodiesel I am going to make my own fuel.

Composting bins won't smell if you make a drum that you can rotate once a day to aerate the mix.  This prevents anaerobic bacteria from producing ammonia.

As tired as I am about this Go Green Campeign, I feel a blog coming on.

Hi Liz:

Great post.  I often think back to an article I read in the National Geographic on a trip one of the correspondents was taking in Africa.  The author needed a guide to take him into the bush, so he asked the chief of the village for a guide.  He pointed to a young man, naked except for a loin cloth, the young man stood up and took his spear in his hand ready to go with the journalist.  The journalist said doesn't he need to pack and get ready - the chief said "he has all that he needs to survive".

We live lives of excess here in North America, if we could cut everything we consume by 1/3 each and everyone of us will make a difference.

I have no idea Liz, but if the comments were made by a Realtor in the Lehigh Valley, PA.... I wanna meet him/her...I think an easy sell :^)

Someone took the time to upload photos - for no reason.  UNLESS - it's some kind of Da Vinci Code

Let's see, a women at a ball game, left her 3 kids alone on someone's steps, while some teacher of TATA COM is investigating their disappearance only to find a frozen tundra.  However, it's not all bad news - during the investigation, she found the perfect house FSBO and bought it.

So, where does the ytu come in?  Beats me.

Not that we are off track.....lol.....but is the kid in the center pickin' his nose or giving the finger?  The tiny tot on the right obviously spotted an ice-cream truck.  And the investigator is not of course a teacher, but rather a tennis player showing off her failed suicide attempt (note bandages).

I'd venture Mrs. Peacock with a wrench in the library kidnapped the kids from Colonel Mustard and his new mistress, Miss Scarlet (ballgame) during an ugly child custody hearing.

1st PLACE WINNER...Green is Red Hot Contest, March 17th, 2007

With these words, LIZ opened a conversation in which all of us can participate. Hi David - funny story about the hybrid - I actually drive into the lot on a Monday (dealerships in Maine aren't open Sundays, but I had driven through it that day) to do just that - buy a hybrid.  There were 4 on the lot that Sunday.  By the time I got there after work on Monday, I past the last remaining hybrid as it pulled out - and the wait for the next batch was too long.  I'm still kcking myself for having not gone back there earlier in the day!  But my Matrix is next best thing......I think.....Liz

I am amazed sometimes at the planning (?) I've seen some agents do - I can't be wasting my time, never mind gas like that! My area is huge compared to more compact city-type areas.  Myself - I've done the "lost soul" bit and hate the feeling - doesn't take long to convince me that logistical planning is important! I didn't realize green was a subject Realtors cared for.  Looking at some of these comments there are some sceptics too.

Growing up in England I grew up with the effort to reduce waste and not be excessive, so being green is a natural extension.  I only buy what is necessary.  I would rather buy half the amount from a more expensive local retailer than twice as much junk from a pile it high national retailer-no names here!

I bought a Honda Civic Hybrid just before Katrina when they were available and am very happy with the performance and love the 46MPG.

In fact I did a piece advertizing "selling homes at 46 MPG"  I might even continue this with another blog.

I'm certainly going to venture into the green realtor department now!!  Next we'll have an anti war blog!

Hi Carl - yes, we care, but not often outwardly.  I have been remiss, and entering this contest, I found out a few daunting facts that make me step back a bit.  And a lot of the comments have had other factoids in them that will help us all.

Guy - I used to print every listing a person wanted to see and use that as my day's guide when setting up showings.  Invariably, I would set it aside, or forget where I put it, and guess what - I'd print again!  Now I organize better to eliminate that from happening.  I still print the listings and make my comments on it - that's an ingrained habit - but they now are put weekly in a notebook so that I won't lose track!

Thanks! Liz

This is a great post. I am a realtor and have always been an environmentalist. It is really exciting to see the green movement becoming so popular. This is what it takes to get things done! I do worry about the lasting effect and hope that it isn't just a passing trend.

Because caring for the earth is so important to me, I share my efforts with my clients and on my webpage. I think people (especially in Portland) want to do business with like-minded people.

A blurb from my website:

"I drive a fuel efficient vehicle and reduce my driving by consolidating trips. I recycle, buy products made from recycled materials, and support local businesses whenever possible. My office is powered by 100% renewable energy. I reduce my paper consumption by using online bill pay, automatic deposits, and electronic correspondence throughout each transaction. I choose to use title companies, lenders and other businesses making a conscious effort to preserve the earth's natural resources."

How fun that janeAnne provided a link to this winning post.  The same list applies today but we could add a few more things.  I just got a Prius in November and LOVE it!

Thanks so much!  Hard to believe it has been 2 years since I wrote that post!  What a difference a year (or two) makes.  It was a fun post to write.  Maybe I should get off my duff and do more, huh?  Thanks again! Liz
