Fourth of July - Closer to Home

This summer many more people will be staying local during the celebration of our country's birth. The Fourth of July is traditionally one of the most popular holidays for travel but due to the escallating prices on gas, food and other items many people will opt to stay closer to home.

This may prove out to be a good thing for your local economy. People will spend their time and money in the businesses and events that happen to be closer to home thus shoring up our own communities.

Perhaps the neighbors you've wanted to meet but usually wave to when you see them at the mailbox will have a barbeque and invite you over to join them. Or better yet you can do the inviting!

Perhaps you'll run into a local businessman you've been meaning to connect with at the fireworks and he'll give you a lead to advance your business.

We as a nation have gone into our shells homes and isolated ourselves from our neighbors for far too long. We bought into the big chain stores, resturants & shopping centers leaving many of our neighbors out of business and having to work for the big corporations who could care less about you.

Perhaps this gas crisis does not need to be the curse we are all complaining about. Perhaps this crisis is meant to be the catalysist to bring us back together, into our individual communities. Perhaps this crisis can be a blessing to bring us back to the simple things in life. Home, friends, family.

We will be staying home this year instead of traveling to see a fireworks show elsewhere. Not because of gas prices though, thankfully (so I don't have to drive somewhere lol), Chloey (our dog) is like deathly afraid of fireworks and I will not drive 30 miles one way to see fireworks for 5 minutes before we are heading back home because she is freaking out lol

Judy, what a great post! We have isolated ourselves and it's a shame...we need each other. The best thing about the street where I live is we're all on first name basis with each other. We're always out in the yard working or speaking when we run into each other at the store.

I agree with you about the big business...our Mom & Pop stores have gone by the wayside and that's where a lot of my childhood memories come from.

Get out there and meet your neighbors! (didn't mean to take so much room...)

Judy I think you are right. Gas prices are going to make people think twice about where they will travel to.

Linda - The neighbor thing is so true - here in NH where we typically live on 1-2 acre lots - it is easy to barely recognize your neighbor because we see them in passing most of the time. Lifestyles today tend to make it easier to get to know coworkers. The mom & pop businesses is a great loss for our communities but perhaps they will rebound under our current circumstances.

Moni - There will be those who travel and those who don't - in any case I think even if people do travel they won't go as far away.

George - people are reassessing all around these days.

Hey Judy -- I know what you mean and agree. We used to run around from state to state at the drop of a hat and not think about it. Now, we plan how far we are willing to drive for our groceries. C - thanks for stopping by - the rate at which this has happened is indeed questionable at best but as long as people will pay the oil companies will keep escallating the price thus keeping the price of everything dependant upon oil going up. Of course i think of the much larger picture and have my theories but we won't go there now.

Judy, how refreshing a positive outlook on the gas situation! Good for you! We will be attending the Portsmouth fireworks as we do every year...they are awesome! It is one of my favorite nights of the year.

Sharon - Thanks for noticing the upside - we are still not sure where we will be. we had planned to be in Maine with the McGills but not sure at this point.

Moni - If you read Simon's blog - he has interviewed a guy - the decendant of Alexander Graham Bell - name JC Bell - who has a way to manufacture oil! from our waste - you should read his post - the guy has 5 plants set to go on line with contracts to supply the military! I think we should invest in his company it sounds like a winner to me.

Every 4^th of July we have always had a neighborhood get together that involves fireworks, food and soda! It is amazing how it brings a community together, they have seen many things change in our lives since the first one. 3 kids, one even born on the 5^th of July one year and my wife was in labor for the fireworks, it was funny after the loud ones everyone would turn to my wife to see if we were going to be leaving (LOL) 7 years later and we are still laughing about that year.
