Don't Be Salty This Winter

With winter in full swing, we're reminding you how to be road salt wise! Chlorides that enter our waterways from road salt can't easily be removed. It's important to only use what we need for safety. This winter, resolve to go on a salt diet. Here are some tips to help you be more salt wise:
  • Shovel snow early
  • Don't use more salt than you need: 12 oz. should cover 10 sidewalk squares
  • Sweep up excess salt
  • Ask private contractors how they manage their salt and encourage them to explore sustainable solutions, including our disposal program. Click here for details.
  • If you see excess salt on the road call us and we'll clean it up
  • Become a Citizen Scientist. Visit Saltwatch.org to get a kit and learn how to test the chlorides in the water.

Yep, it sure can be corrosive. I remember the problems it caused with cars growing up in Alaska. Good tip for snowy climates like yours. D

I have always wondered how they take care of salt so it does not enter waterways.

I remember visiting a relative in Colorado years ago.  The lower part of the body of his car had been corroded away by road salt.  I hadn't seen anything quite like it.

Morning Roy.

Been living in NW Arkansas for almost four decades.  I can count on one hand how many times the roads were salted.

Great tips, Roy. Fortunately, not something I have to worry about, in general, in Charlotte. And that makes me quite happy.

Roy,

Good thips on salt use, something we do not have to deal with in our part of the state.  Happy Sunday to Chef Dolores and you.  A

I am so grateful that my house gets direct sun and the snow melts away on its own very quickly
