Have you visited the mirrormates.com website.  Well here's my version.

Always keeping the budget in mind I have done this in several bathrooms.  This is our Hawaii condo, master bath.  I know that the before photo doesn't look BAD, but honestly it was awful.  You can't see the rust, the edge of the mirror in bad shape, mismatched hardware and more.

The framing is easy.  NO miter cuts, just straight cuts and rosettes on the corners.  On this one I used my favorite espresso color spray paint with fluted wood trim.  The only secret is using a good mirror adhesive and don't put on the top piece until the sides are dried and can help support the top.  Wa la...a new bath for little $$.

UPDATE...don't use just any mirror adhesive.  Some are better than others and set up faster.  I used a Loctite product for glass and mirror surfaces.  Other adhesives take too long to set and the wood will slide and make a mess.  I bought it at Lowes.

Ginger ~ WOW!  what an incredible makeover!!  I need to do this is my own bathroom.  I have a huge mirror that needs framing....and I love that rich espresso color you chose.  My bathroom has white cabinets and now I'm wondering if they could be painted darker too?  I love your new light fixture (and the bulbs point in the right direction, DOWN).  Thanks for the link.

This is great.

I saw another company with something similar but they only came in specific sizes so there was no flexability and they were pricey!

Dane, mirrormates is pricey for my budget minded attitude, but I'm envious of the creator that turned her idea into a great enterprise.  Thanks for commenting.

Don't know who the first comment is from (not logged in?) but thank you.  These cabinets are also painted, not a dark color but a sandy color.  The paint is American Traditions (lowes) espresso in a satin finish.  I use it a lot!

Ginger ~ Great idea!  I like the idea of no miter cuts.  I like your new light fixture too!

Ginger what a great idea, thanks for sharing with everyone, nowadays national builders just provide a plain mirror to save cost, that looks so generic, just putting frame gives the bathroom custom look.  I love the color you chose for the bathroom looks very spa like. I am going to try it.

Hi Kathy, thank you for your kind comments.  Actually a compound angle chop saw is one of my favorite power tools and I can do great miter cuts, but if something goes wrong I hate using caulk. So this is a better solution AND one that most people can accomplish.  Several of my staging clients have done this and they're always pleased with the results.

Shobha it sounds like your area builders have the same ideas and those in my area.  ALL low end fixtures, mirrors and finishes.  I swear that they have have stock in Lowes and Home Depots outdated warehouse items.  Shiny brass, plain mirrors and even bug lites in the bedrooms.  I've tried talking some design sense into them, but they just look at me like I'm crazy.  The condo has those colors throughout...ocean/spa colors for the calm and cool look.  Thanks for commenting and give us a show of your project if you find the time to do this.

Very pretty and thanks for the idea. I can use it in our condo in Florida for a quick and easy update. Thanks for sharing.

Elaine, thanks so much for your "appreciating" comments.  I am pleased with the outcome and anxious to get back to make a few changes in the other bath.  Need to "cool" it down.  Enjoy looking a mirrormates ideas.  You can get a designers package to share with your clients.  I mainly refer them to the website for ideas.

WOW!  I learn so much from everyone on AR.  Thank you for sharing.  What a GREAT way to give style and class to a plain bathroom mirror.

Oooo, I frame out mirrors all the time but never have I used the rossettes. Never will I struggle with a mitre cut again. thanks for sharing.

5:46pm • #14

HI Ginger,

I have done the same around a mirror in my daughters room as well as around my closets.  I brought the moulding up 16" higher than the top of the closet and then added the rosettes, then used another piece of moulding across.  Paint the all the moulding, the inside area and the closets a glossy white and viola!  The finished look makes the closet look impressive.

Amazing product, huh?  We are talking to them about StagersLIST too, I read someone's blog about this a couple of months ago, great product.  Stagers resource...for sure.

Anita, glad to be of inspiration.  The nice thing is that depending upon the style that you want to achieve you just change the wood trim and the color.  Thanks for commenting.

Kimberly, as much as I enjoy using the chop saw and making specific and careful miters, it's really nice to not have to worry about it AND so much faster.  Glad to be of help.

Lisa, can you share a photo of the closets?  I too have used rosettes, of many different designs, for door molding.  I guess I could share those photos too.  Please let us see your creative work.

Terrylynn, mirrormates offers a nice discount to those of us in the design field.  Hope they join the Stagers.LIST resource.  Thanks for commenting.

Ginger, Thank you so much for sharing this.. I have looked at the Mirrormates but your idea is SO much better..

Ok, do you mind sharing your spray paint brand..

Also, I can't really see the after color of your cabinets. ALSO, did you glue over the metal trim??

Sorry for all the questions, but love learning more about this.. I just knew that I should be able to do this with regular molding - does it stand out away from the mirror??  I have a redesign client that needs this. God bless,

Thanks for the info and thanks for the suggestion of what order to attach the pieces.  Nice work!

Cheryl, I use American Traditions (I think, anyway it's a Lowes brand), color is espresso and the finish is satin.  The cabinets are a sandy color called Water Chestnut.  It's an ICI/Glidden color.  I use it A LOT for many different applications in my home, in staging and in design.

This bathroom mirror was glued to the wall so no "J" channel or plastic clips to work around.  However I have glued over J channel.  ALSO I forgot to mention that you really should paint the back of the wood trim black because it will be reflected in the mirror.  The trim sits right on top of the mirror.  I think on this particular on it extended about 1.5 onto the mirror and another 1 inches beyond the mirror.  Yes this trim was 2.5" wide and the rosettes were about 3" square.  Hope this makes sense.

I don't mind the questions at all.  Any more just send 'em my way.  I don't have many secrets.

Is there any trick to gluing over the plastic clips?

Ginger, I love it!  We have a large mirror in our bathroom that I have wanted to do something with for a long time.  When I find some time (LOL) I think I'll try this - it looks fantastic!  Thanks for sharing your idea.

Lora the plastic clips are tricky.  First I would remove just the top ones and see if the mirror is also glued.  Sometimes installers do both and the clips hold up the mirror while the glue is drying.  If yes, then no problem, just remove the clips.  If not, then I would remove the top clips, use a caulking gun to apply some glue to the back of the mirror, replace the clips while it dries and then remove again.  If the mirror is sitting on top of a black splash then usually you're ok for stability.

I have also used a pneumatic nail gun to attach the trim and the rosettes but also use the glue so there are no gaps.  It takes more time because you have to fill the nail holes, sand and such so I avoid the clips if possible.

The J channel is the easier to work with and you can use it on the top and the bottom, then everything is secure and easy to cover.

IF you use mirrormates system they have ways around this issue.  You have to measure carefully for each install and they make the trim to adapt to the clips.

Charlene, oh how I hear you.  I've had a project in my living area started and incomplete for two years.  It's the ole' shoemakers daughter story.  It just doesn't seem as important or as much fun in my own house.  Probably by the time I get around to it again, I won't like the original plan because I'm so addicted to change in my interiors.   Good luck "finding" the time.

Thanks for the great advice.  I've always want to try to frame our mirrors, but didn't know what to do with the clips.

Ginger,

Wow, what a difference a frame makes!! Beautiful job!!

Ginger, it is funny that I see this blog.  I saw something like this already put together in Lowes a couple of months ago and went back this past weekend to buy it.  However, I couldn't find it and no one knew what I was talking about.  I am so glad to see that I can easily do it myself.  I was feeling bummed because I thought I was going to have to go out and spend a fortune on a new mirror.  I have a huge mirror over my double vanity.  Thank you so much for sharing.

Lora, glad to be of help.  Hope it goes smoothly.

Patty, thanks again for stopping by.  I'm going to post a photo of a gorgeous bathroom that really needs this treatment, but I've been unsuccessful at convincing the seller AND he's a contractor so he has the skill.

Michelle, karma.  I know exactly the product that you're speaking of. I saw them at Lowes probably 6 months ago and haven't seen them since.  In fact, I think Terry Haugen did a post about them.  Doesn't it seem strange that often we know more about Lowes than the folks that work there?  (-:  Post your photos when you're done.

Penny, I'm always happy when RE agents stop by and look at my posts.  Thanks for commenting.  Hope you're using a professional stager.

Sandy, why thank you.  It's nice when updates aren't too complicated or costly.

Kim, this is SO-O much easier.  No messy caulk if the miters don't exactly fit.  Thank you.
