Meet the Pacific Madrone AKA Arbutus Menziesii

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Napa Consultants DRE00893924

"Arbutus menziesii, the Pacific madrone or madrona, is a species of tree in the family Ericaceae, native to the western coastal areas of North America, from British Columbia to California." Wikipedia

This is one of our favorite trees. The first picture shows these strawberry balls it produces. The common name for this tree is strawberry tree. It also produces long strands of pink beads (pictured above).

We are fortunate to see them in many spots around Santa Barbara. These are part of the landscaping between parking rows in the Trader Joe's parking lot. You will find that the majority of parking lots in our area have native landscaping, and is a requirement.

It's so nice that native vegetative varities are used in and around town at shoppingn centers etc.  Interesting plant.....I've never seen one that I recall.  The strawberry balls as well as the beads are pretty!  Does this happen a few times a year or?

Alexandra loved your post as I walked Holly today I was so sad to see a new owner cut down four palm trees and a very mature Avocado Tree in our hood. I said why??? just to add more living space to his home? or just being a jerk?? time will tell, Endre

Good morning, Alexandra... until I read your post I had no idea there was such a thing as a strawberry tree... as a fan of both pink and flowering trees, I like it!

Can you eat the berries?  I love seeing trees or bushes with berries that are edible, especially if I can grab a few for myself, haha.

So many trees, many I've not seen. Like others, wondering if the fruit is edible?

Myrl Jeffcoat They can grow in your area, however since many cut the trees for firewood because it smells good, they are scarce. I was delighted that they are being planted.  A

Dear Ron & Alexandra,

If memory serves, this tree can have very colorful bark. Neat tree for sure. I did not know it has edible berries.
