Squirrel Appreciation Day..Don’t Tell Barbara Todaro!

Shhhhh- don’t tell our friend Barbara Todaro about this!!! Today is Squirrel Appreciation Day and if you’ve seen my posts you know that I love all wildlife, especially squirrels.

And you would be correct in saying that squirrels can cause major damage to a home. But like other creatures, squirrels do have their good sides.

Besides giving us...especially children...a great amount of joy, squirrels are good distributors of seeds and nuts and “aerate your lawns with holes.”

From my observations, squirrels are pretty benevolent as well. I’ve seen them take all kinds of abuse from our bluebirds during nesting season. They take it while being dive-bombed by mama and papa bluebird.

One more thing...squirrels are pretty smart little creatures.  When they hear Larry opening the blinds in the morning, they are there ready for their morning peanuts!!!

Kathy,

We had a squirrel in the walnut tree at my parent's home in Minnesota.  He loved bombing the dog with walnuts, and the dog kept trying to catch him.  We have a dear friend, who has squirrels  come to his patio for peanuts every day.  A

We had a Jaguar dealership, in my service area, that had the same problem with squirrels as many. The squirrels did over $100k damage (total) to six brand new Jaguars in their lot. The squirrels enjoyed the taste of the insulation on the electrical wiring; stripping, than shorting out all the cars electrical systems.

Life did not end well for those poor Squirrels that ingested all that insulation

I agree they are pretty clever, I have not found a bird feeder yet they cannot beat in someway or form, even if it is simply to pick up what gets dropped by the birds underneath. Maybe their temprement comes from living in the moment...

Wayne Martin I'll bet!!!!  We had peacocks that used to show up too when we were in Delray. This is their mating season and I can tell you they get very loud.

Kat Palmiotti I call him Jabba (as in Star Wars)

Myrl Jeffcoat thank you for the feature in your group. I've felt like that when it's in the 90's outside.

Roy Kelley hope that you and Chef Dolores are being safe as well.

Sharon Lee we have baffles on the pole where the bird house is as well as on the feeder pole. The squirrel tries once or twice and realizes he can't go any further.

I am happy to know you are protecting the bluebirds that come into your yard but squirrels are determined critters and those beautiful bluebirds have many enemies including other birds and they know who their enemies are.  They aren't abusing the squirrels they are protecting their future young and their hatchlings  Think what you or any of us would do if someone was out to kill our family.

Ed Silva we did that years ago (when they allowed them in Palm Beach County) to raccoons!  They were under our house.

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! how lucky you are to have an almond tree!!! I know we have pecan trees in the area but we don't have one.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel I would love to see the squirrels bomb something with the walnuts!!! But that would hurt, too.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS oh that is sad and if it got into our Jag I think that would be the end of the squirrels for us.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 good thought!!!  When we were in Delray Beach, the peacocks would eat the corn that was dropped by the squirrels. No waste!

What fun photos, Kathy. Squirrels are certainly interesting creatures to watch.

We have ground squirrels here in our area, and their hole digging can be pretty destructive, and they are persistent beyond belief!

Kathy Streib I find them to be the most amazing little creatures - many of the residents where I live find them very destructive - Have you ever seen what they construct their nests of?  I looked through binoculars on day and was amazed at how clever they are

I'm ok with the squirrels in our yard...very entertaining to watch. It's the chipmunk that lives under our front porch that annoys me. I wouldn't mind so much if that little guy suddenly no longer existed. LOL

Dear Kathy,

You got some great shots! Cracked me up. Where do you buy the corn? Look like some exotic varieties.

They look cute until they encroach into one's attic and running and bouncing when sleep at night. The foxes help them to stay away from our yard. Source of habitat.
