Some things are just technical but some things are FUN technical! IMHO - really FUN is checking my Traffic!

Let's start with a definition of TRAFFIC. Basically, your traffic is how many clicks you received - meaning how many people viewed your Blog post.

There are two types of TRAFFIC. Organic traffic is what you get naturally without having to “force” it - that is, paying to get the readers or to use some other method to get eyeballs on your post.

Most organic traffic comes from searches. That means the traffic you get when a person types a question or a keyword into Google, your blog post comes up in the results, and they click on it. However, organic traffic may come from two other sources as well: "referral traffic" when a person clicks on a link to your post from another website or "direct traffic" from a link in an email or the person types your URL directly into their browser.

Paid traffic is traffic that you “force” to bring viewers to your Blog post with advertisements from sites such as Google AdWords, Twitter ads, Facebook ads,Banner ads or some other way.

On ActiveRain, one has access to two different URL's for each post. Of course, the standard one and then, the "short URL" also. When a viewer clicks on your post from the AR site, the standard URL is what brings the person to your Blog post.

Once, about 100 years ago, when taking a class on AR, the instructor suggested using the short URL when expanding the reach of your post. So when I post on LinkedIn or Facebook or elsewhere, I use the short URL. Now I can tell how many viewers were inside the AR community and how many viewed from my LinkedIn post.

For the post on the 18th, a re-blog, I did not post elsewhere - no short URL.

The red arrows indicate two columns I sort sometimes. I can reverse the date order and I can reverse the View numbers column. Below is my most-viewed post date. Nothing like the numbers Debbie Gartner scores on her posts but still seems like a lot to me!

If you feel disappointed to have NO COMMENTS on your post, don't assume it wasn't read! Go check your traffic. Imagine how much better I felt seeing how many views I'd had after I had checked my post and not even seen one comment!

While one may create one's own short URL, the traffic statistics on AR are long/short. So making one for FB and one for LinkedIn, etc. may be possible
but in this context, I wouldn't know where the click originated.

I will check my traffic once in a while but I am always disappointed, haha. I get views, likes and comments, but rarely do I get clicks. Clicks are what we want to see, right?

I haven't checked traffic stats in quite some time. I do remember however, that there was quite a bit of google juice that pumped my stats in the earlier years of ActiveRain. However, at about the time we were connected up with Trulia, the juice became less powerful. It hasn't been the same since.

Thanks so much for the mention. I appreciate it. Several years back, they changed the stats. I think those may now be impressions rather than actual pageviews. I forget. It's much better to send traffic to your own site and actually use Google Analytics which is more accurate and actionable.
