On January 21, 2020, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits gained 4.5% to 1,709,000 units in December of 2020 from 1,635,000 units in November of 2020, and rose 817.3% from 1,510,000 in December of 2019. Single family building permits up 7.8% to a rate of 1,226,000 units in December of 2020, from 1,137,000 units in November of 2020, and there were 437,000 multifamily building permits issued in December of 2020.
Nationwide housing starts increased 5.8% to 1,669,000 units in December of 2020, from 1,578,000 units in November of 2020 and rose 5.2% from 1,587,000 units in December of 2019. Single family starts were higher 12.0% to a rate of 1,338,000 units in December of 2020 from 1,195,000 in November of 2020, and there were 312,000 multifamily building starts in December of 2020.
Nationwide housing completions jumped 15.9% to 1,417,000 units in December of 2020 from 1,223,000 units in November of 2020, and increased 8.0% from 1,312,000 units in December of 2019. Single family completions grew 10.2% to a rate of 984,000 units in December of 2020 from 893,000 units in November of 2020, and there were 422,000 multifamily completions in December of 2020.
