Love Of Language

I like quotes and know there are others who share that appreciation here on ActiveRain as well.  The interesting thing, to me, is how each of us can interpret a quote differently.

That’s true when considering the gist of the sum of the combination or even individual words.  Situations and circumstances have influences.  Perspective.  Usage.

Just the other day, I overheard two people talking.  They were speaking in a foreign language.  One that was vaguely known to me but nevertheless not comprehensible.  Not at all.  Maybe gesturing would have helped me understand a bit.  Tone or volume might be beneficial.  Meanwhile, I wonder especially since that conversation did not include me.  What are they discussing? Is it something of great consequence or simply small talk? I don't know. And that's okay. Now, if my intention was communication and/or some type of connection - then we have another issue. Otherwise, it's simply a moment in time.

Sharon Lee - that level of smartness(of the piles of it) seems to be ever-growing.

Ed Silva - ah, a good clue for you and a cue too.

CANDACE (Candy) STEVENS - there are many factors that not only influence our thoughts but often confuse us too.

James Dray - I am with you with speaking/writing English and am quite amazed by those people who are multi-lingual.

Nina Hollander - your comment reminds me of a story that I have mentioned before(maybe on ActiveRain too).  Many years ago, I was traveling on business in Rome and one of my business companions spoke multiple languages.  We were obviously conversing in English while having lunch one day when we overheard two women at the table next to us having a conversation where they were talking about us but in Dutch.  He looked at me and said "I am going to have some fun with these two ladies".  As we left the table, he "surprised" them by saying something to them while exiting.  He never did tell me about their discussion or exactly what he said.  But I could "tell" they were a bit embarrassed.  Or at least that was my impression.

I think that I know what they were talking about.  My guess is that they were saying to each other, look at that guy over there eavesdropping on us.  He is trying to figure out what we are saying and has no idea that we are talking about him, haha.

Michael, I sort of understand French, and a bit of Spanish, but when my nail tech talks to her sister, do not understand anything.

That is interesting how many languages use inflection, volume and hand gestures to get a point across Michael Jacobs

I also appreciate hearing other languages, and rarely do I understand much either. Perhaps a bit of Spanish or French, not enough to grasp what's going on.  What boggles my mind is missing someone's point in a conversation spoken in English." Excusez-moi, parlez-vous Francais?"

I had a moment in time the other day when I realized how important facial expressions are to someone making a joke.  I was with one long time friend and two of her friends.  They were helping me stage a condo in their building.  One of the newer friends cracked a joke that I took as a serious comment because I could not see her total facial expression.  She realized immediately and had to say it was a joke.

Much is lost in language when you lose non-verbal cues.

Hi Michael! I enjoy reading others' interpretations of particular quotes - quotes that we grew up with. I'm often surprised at their take on something, feeling like I may have gone too deep in my own!

As for overhearing another conversation, my manicurist is Korean, as are most of those who work in her salon. I often wonder what they are giggling about but, don't really pay that much attention to the barrier now - if they're talking to me, it's in English. Otherwise, I'm just going to enjoy being pampered for an hour!

Several years ago, I started taking my BFF to the salon for a mani-pedi for her birthday. The first time we went together, she asked, "Do you ever feel like they're talking about you?!" I hadn't ever thought of that - I always think it's someone or something else they are talking about. I don't know if that's confidence or naivety!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I can't remember if you are a Seinfeld fan or not but your comment made me think of an episode of that show where Elaine(Julia Louis Dreyfuss) went to her nail salon but everyone in the salon spoke Korean. They were constantly laughing and she felt she might be the subject of their conversation. She brings along George's(Jason Alexander's character)father(Jerry Stiller) who happens to understand Korean.  Not to give away too much more of the episode but be assured...trouble and comedy hi-jinks ensue.  🤣

I am so impressed by people who know multiple languages. I wish I had learned more than just minimal Spanish in high school. I'm using Duolingo online everyday to learn Spanish now, but at this age it is not really sticking like it would have had I kept it up after high school.

Sharon Tara - although I started in fourth or fifth grade through senior year of high school - you can pick up a lot but not enough to carry own a conversation beyond some basics.

This was evidenced by a trip to Mexico in my 20s where a friend had lost the keys to her parents' place where we were staying.  I flagged down a police car in hopes he could "help" us.  Needless to say, he spoke no English and my Spanish skills were/are not the greatest so keys in Spanish(llaves) was interpreted by him as kilos.

Yeah, you guessed it - trouble ensues along with hijinks with the local law enforcement office where the officer who was really in charge(and spoke some English) explained that the guy who spotted us was only a trainee recently hired because he was really a boxer.

I should have sold the story to television as an episode of a comedy series.   Oh, well.

That is an awesome story! LOL

I do wish you had sold it to a tv series. What a story that would make!

Dear Michael,

When I interpret for people, who do not speak the language of the conversation, they are often surprised by how boring the things were, we were discussing. Who is going to buy the bread & who heads out for the milk sounds so much cooler, when you have no clue what is being said.
