Harry, good post. In many endeavors, estimates are not as they initially seem. They rarely are based on the same materials and services.
Thanks Steve. I can telly you that based on my 12 years in the moving and storage industry, moving is a competitive business and therefore, many sales reps tell the customer what they want to hear rather than what they need to hear.
The facts speak for themselves...regardless if the estimate is based on weight or time, what the customer is moving is what they're moving and there is a "real/true" cost to perform that service based on the actual weight or the actual time.
The whole reason I started my business is to provide that "independent" source for the home owner. I represent their interest in the moving process from beginning to end. I don't get paid by the mover, I am paid by the home owner to manage the moving process on their behalf. I am their advocate and as such keep the movers from taking advantage be it up front on the estimate, during the move itself by allowing them to load items that are not intended to go (inflating the weight) or dragging their feet (increasing the time) or even at the end when the customer may be entitled to be paid for a claim yet the moving company says, NO!
