You know that there are people that get hired as an expert witness for a court trial? They get paid simply to testify in court what their opinion is (no – that doesn’t sound like a potential conflict of interest at all – LOL). And the opposing counsel most likely will pay another expert witness to say the opposite of the first paid expert witness.
The ironic part? Some of these expert witnesses have barely had employment in their field. They just testify in trials and get paid for that.
There are folks that claim that they are experts because they have special letters after their name or special pieces of paper that proclaims them as an expert. That’s all nice and well and dandy. Personally, I call the person that can do their job in a knowledgeable manner to be the expert.
Person A may have years more of education but if person B does the job and is highly capable in doing it, maybe B is the real expert.
Once upon a time I had just been hired to sell a legal database and train legal firms how to use it. My first day on the job a woman called me asking for help finding certain information in our database. I helped her. She had an unusual name and so I remembered it. Then months later we published information about the major victory they had with their case.
Then years later I happened to watch a movie about her and the case, “Erin Brockovich”. Hmmm, since I helped her get the information she needed, do you think I can get paid as an expert?
