Weather, and a crazy schedule, got in the way of our planned on-camera video shoot this week.  And actually, that's okay, as an important step prior to shooting your on-camera is planning. Therefore, today, we're sharing tips for setting up your on-camera shots.

Quality First.

We are assuming you have a good camera, or smart phone, and an external microphone. Please use a selfie stick or a tripod too. If not, you'll need to get that lined up first.

Where will you shoot?

Obviously, you'll want an attractive backdrop whether shooting indoors, or outside. Consider your niche and brand. As nature-lovers, you can guess we'll be filming ours outdoors.

Lighting is huge!

Indoor considerations: Face a window. Diffused natural lighting is kind our faces.

If you aren't getting good lighting from a window, invest in some inexpensive LED lights.

In a pinch, you can even use lamps and lights used around the home. Experiment!

Outside considerations: Plan your shoot on a day with good lighting.

The best time to film outside is in the morning, when the sun is still coming up, or in the evening when the sun starts to go down.

Avoid the harsh light of midday.

Do a few test runs and check for shadows, etc.

Frame up the Shot.

You don't want to distract viewers with a busy background - the focus at this point in the video is you. Make sure there's not a telephone pole, or tree, that appears to grow out of your head.

Use the rule of thirds. Avoid the tendency to stand dead center in the screen.

Eyes should be the main focal point regardless of using a wide shot or a close up.

In close up shots, make sure to include your neck and top of the shoulders.

What to wear, what to wear?

Avoid blending in with the background.

Wear clothes suitable for your neighborhood video tour, your style and personality.

Ladies, leave the statement jewelry for another day. The focus should be on your eyes.

Bottom line, wear something that makes you feel comfortable and confident.

As you communicate to the camera, visualize talking to a trusted friend or loved one - and relax!

ViewHomes™ grew out of our passion for nature, beautiful surroundings, and peaceful environments. Starting together in an urban environment, over the years we've gravitated towards areas with smaller populations and less density. We now enjoy our lifestyle in a rural environment, but with close proximity to metropolitan areas where we appreciate all the amenities of fine restaurants, shopping, and an easy drive to an international airport.
Living in ViewHomes™ is like having “elbowroom for the soul”.
