Years ago, a “secret agent” was a real estate agent that didn’t tell anybody that they were in the business. Now in the age of vanity there is a new form of “secret agent”. They are the agent that markets themselves openly and publicly, and yet they do so with a business photo that is 10, 20 or even 30 years old.
When I was in my 20s, I made it a point to change the photo on my card every 2 to 2 ½ years. Certainly, when one reaches their 30s or 40s, one should ponder making an appointment every 2 years. You know update that photo because uh, … the STYLE has changed. Yes, that is it, the style has changed. You want to update the style in your photo.
I actually saw someone hand out their card and the prospect looked at the card and looked back at the agent and asked how long has their daughter been working with them. Well, that wasn’t their daughter in the photo, it was them. The photo was so outdated, it appeared as if the woman in the card must be the agent’s daughter because the agent was far older than the photo.
Now yes, you may have been the head cheerleader in high school or the starting quarterback in college, however as great as you looked back then, that is not the photo you want to use for business. The photo you use for business should get you business because of one simple reason – you actually LOOK LIKE the person in the photo and so strangers can easily recognize you.
I was away from the rain for about 9 years and I notice a couple profiles that still have the same photo. And the photo was outdated back in 2011.
Let’s all stop being “secret agents” and start looking like our photos. And update them every 30 months or 30,000 miles – whichever is sooner.
