Are you aware of the fact that most brokerages today are recruiting 70% experienced compared to only 30% new agents?  Why is this happening?  What do we need to know about the needs and skill sets of newer "seasoned" agents that have only been in the business for the past two or three years?  Liz Boone just posted an excellent discussion of this on her blog today.  It is really worth reading!  You can find it at:

2 Comments on Recruiting Experienced Agents in the Current Real Estate Market

Thank you for that article Forrest - as a new agent myself, I really believe that it doesn't have much to do with experience though. Of course I might not be able to get the leads under my belt as quick as someone "seasoned" BUT every ounce of energy in me is just ready to be used. I know if I am to get hired, I have the edge to outwork any experienced worker. I also think it depends on drive - I personally am willing to better myself by any means necessary when a lot of experienced realtors simply do it on the side for some extra cash. It is certainly a matter of opinion but I did enjoy reading that article!

I just realized I had forgotten to sign in when I posted! :)

Kirstyn,

Thank you very much for this perspective and you comments.  In a way you are making the point of Liz Boone's blog!  The reality is that it is a huge mistake to make any assumptions about "experienced" agents when recruiting them.  As you say, many are out there and just hanging on because they are not committed, full time agents.  Also part of what we need to assess is that drive, determination, and work ethic that is not always apparent.  However, once we discover any agent's strength and weaknesses . . .  it is our responsibility to provide the training and mentoring that will truly take your business to a better, more productive, more efficient level.  We owe you that . . . and that is why we should get the facts and refrain from making any assumptions based on old perceptions of "what does it mean to be a seasoned agent".  You are an example of the agent we are all looking to bring into our organizations and work with!

Thanks again!

Forrest
