Two Master Bedrooms

Why is this a trend, and where can you find them?

Why would anyone want two master bedrooms? And if dual sleeping arrangements works best, where in the world do you find a home with two master bedrooms?  Here's a few of the reasons a home with two master suites is becoming more common:

• Elderly parents are visiting or moving in with their middle aged children.

I remember my parents giving up their bedroom when my grandparents came to visit, so that they could have the more comfortable place to stay.  Homebuyers looking for two master bedrooms want to give their guests as much comfort and luxury as possible - without giving up their own space.  And when elderly parents move in, both couples have their own private space to retreat to.

• Couples find that time alone creates better time together.

Many couples that are requesting homes with two master suites cite sleeping problems or differing schedules.  "My wife's a very light sleeper," said one.  "I like to stay up late reading or watching tv in bed.  This way, we both get the sleep we need." 

• Snoring or medical conditions might mean that two master bedrooms are better than one. 

Snoring is probably the most common reason noted by couples for requesting two master bedrooms - connected by a common hallway and luxurious bathroom.  But other situations can be heartwrenching.  If a spouse needs special medical care or a type of bed that can't be shared, two master bedrooms allow both spouses to have a peaceful place to sleep - while still close to each other. 

Are you searching for a home with two master bedrooms?  They're tough to find. 

You may want to search for a home with an in-law suite.  These homes usually have a traditional master suite, but then include another bedroom with a full attached bath and a large closet.  In many cases, in-law suites can make a terrific space for short or long term guests.  Click here for some good places to look for an in-law suite floor plan.

Another option is working with a custom builder to convert a traditional home plan into a home with two master bedrooms.

 Here's a section of a home typical to the style custom builders in our area offer in the $300-400K price point. 

We can redesign this floor plan just slightly, and give the new homeowner the two master bedrooms they're looking for.

The living room would be walled off, and would become the second master bedroom.  We would work with the homebuyer to determine exactly how much closet space they are looking for, and how it should be distributed. 

Both bedrooms would then share the central master bath. 

In our case, a change like this could be accomplished with very little additional cost. 

And it's not hard to convert other home plans into a design that could be considered a "two master bedroom" home.

The downstairs study or bedroom 4 is already well planned as a guest suite.  If the homebuyer is looking to use this fairly permanently as a guest suite, we might suggest removing the exterior doorway to the bath, and adding a half bath elsewhere on the first floor for regular use.
