Mount Pleasant is a beautiful place, and there are so many great reasons to make it your home, but here are a few little tidbits that you may not have already known.

  1. With almost 60,000 residents, Mount Pleasant is among the six most populated cities in all of South Carolina and is now similar in population to Greenville and Rock Hill.  Its population has shrimp boatgrown by more than 400% since 1980.
  2. The first Cooper Bridge, the Grace Memorial, opened 80 years ago as a two-lane toll road.  It took almost 40 more years for its sister bridge, the Pearlman, to open.
  3. Only those Charleston residents wealthy enough to afford summer homes originally populated the "Old Village".
  4. Riverside, once an integral part of Mount Pleasant, was a primary black beach whose hayday began in 1930 and whose dance pavillion featured performances by musical legends that included Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Louis Armstrong.
  5. More than 750,000 people each year find themselves at Patriot's Point Naval and Maritime Museum to either takle advantage of the attractions, experience the myriad of activities or visit Fort Sumter.
  6. Wando High School has a massive enrollment of 2900 students.  An incredible 96% of its 2007 graduating class continue their education.
  7. Mount Pleasant is home to highly educated residents, with more than half its adult population possessing a college degree.
  8. Now praised as a shining example of the new urbanism, I'On was developed only after a lengthly legal contest with the Town of Mount Pleasant ended when the state Supreme Court ruled in I'On's favor.
  9. Mount Pleasant prides itself on having one of the most diverse, active and well-staffed municipal recreation departments in the United States, offering outstanding  programs for residents of all ages.
  10. The median family income is over $70,000.
