Marie-Claire Kirkland

By
Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Marie-Claire Kirkland was born back in 1924 in Palmer, Massachusetts to Charles and Rose.  I didn’t find much of her childhood.  So, let’s cut to the chase.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1947, her Bachelor of Civil Law in 1950 from McGill University.

She became a judge in 1973, retiring in 1991.  She died in 2016, she was 91.

What you may not know about Marie-Claire Kirkland-Casgrain is that she was the first woman elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, the first woman appointed a Cabinet minister in Quebec, the first woman appointed acting premier and the first woman judge to serve in the Quebec Provincial Court.

I know this one is short, however sometimes I can’t find more to make it interesting.

Interesting how an American woman ended up a judge in Canada. I guess she attended McGill University and liked it there.

Hi James Dray
There are more questions, aren't there. Since she was born in Massachusetts and attended university in Quebec, I wonder if she was required to become a Canadian citizen in order to be a judge there.  My husband was born in Canada and was required to become a U.S. citizen to work for the federal government in the U.S.  He maintained dual citizen ship throughout his life.

Hello James - my level of knowledge of the background of United States judges is rather limited, so you might be able to guess what that awareness is of those who sit in Canada.
