Mike's Covid Blog...Which is Worse the illness or the Cure?

Today is the day.  I am scheduled for the first of the two Wuhan Virus Covid shots in about an hour.

I know many folks are excited to receive it or have it scheduled and many are frustrated they cannot get it yet.

I am not in either of those groups. Nor do I want to be.

Don't get me wrong...I am not one of those who thinks it is a hoax...I believe it is real...and I also believe it was intentionally released to do exactly what it is doing...but that is a blog for another day.

I do know people who have died from the virus.  But every one that I personally knew had either major health issue either currently or in the past...and the one I knew best was a heavy smoker.

I do not have any major health issues nor have I smoked in 45 years and even then it was not inhaled.

I also have went about my business as usual the past year and had the best year of my 28 year career.

I know a lot of you who comment on my blogs are in my age bracket...the age of "yes I can retire but why should I?" group; but I am curious about those of all ages.

How many of you...regardless of age or health have either had the shots are or going to get the shots when you can?

The last time I had a flu shot...roughly 10 years ago...it made me very sick for 2 days.  I am apprehensive that this could happen again. I have not gotten the flu in the past 20+ years except from the shot.

I have family begging me to get the Covid shots and yet I have been around thousands of people over the last 14 months and have not gotten the virus. I also have not been sick from anything else.

I am a HUGE believer in herd immunity and the body's ability to self manufacture it's own immune antibodies just as the body has an ability to not walk in front of a train...or for the body's organs to heal themselves.

I normally like to be optimistic but with all that has gone on in the past year...and especially the past 3 months...that has gotten harder.

SO why get the shots then?  Why not walk away?

2 primary reasons:

I am sick and tired of hearing my wife and son talk about it and how scared they are for me of dying from Covid.  (I am 99.9% not worried about that happening).

I will be a guinea pig for older friends and family and online contacts as to what all goes on.

I will report back here how it goes and what the process is here in Nebraska. I received a phone call from my DR.s office asking me to schedule it and I never contacted anyone...they did it all.

I am sure I will have to sign a release form...and if so there is still a chance I will walk away...because....why would they want us to sign a hold harmless agreement if it is safe?

Time to head to the fairgrounds to the oldest building on the grounds to get a shot...which in and of itself...seems odd.

Until next time...let's hope there is a next time!

I get your hesitation, Mike. My husband is 83 and has had both shots and is totally fine, as is one of our neighbors who is also 83. Although I sort of do feel if we wait long enough we'll develop natural heard immunity.

Hello Mike - you may have opened a can of worms with this post as you fish for comments.  My Mom has received her first vaccination and is scheduled for number two this Friday. So has one of my nieces and her husband who are both health care professionals.  I am not necessarily looking forward to it but will be vaccinated when the time comes. As far as those who are anti-vaccination, I believe they have existed long before now and undoubtedly will be around long after.

Hi Nina Hollander Glad to hear that you husband is doing well. And the neighbor. So far so good with me. Thanks for stopping by!

Michael Jacobs Thanks for your candid comments.  I really do want both sides of the issue commented on. As far as a can of worms...I disagree.  I do not buy into that comment at all on any subject.  I am not "fish"ing for comments but would like people to share their experience with the vaccine or their desire to not take it.

If I end up with only a few comments on this blog...that also is telling me something.

It is now 3.5 hours since I took vaccine shot #1 and it feels like any other shot.

Yes...even though I have not taken the flu shot in a decade and will continue to not take that one...I have had other age appropriate shots for certain things.  So it is not an anti-vaccination thing for me...it is not taking vaccines that do not have a long term track record.

The yearly flu shot (which is changed every year based on a guess etimate) and now the Covid shots do not have a lengthy track record like the vaccines used for tetanus and shingles.

I do agree that anti-vaccination folks will be around for a long long time...perhaps longer than those who pump their bodies full of synthetic drugs.

Thank you both for stopping by.

Mike - obviously my somewhat subtle attempt at sarcasm was a miss and did not hit the bullseye.  Sorry, for any confusion - I am glad things are working out for you so far and many others.

Hi Mike- I have been on the fence about the vaccine. But I am 71 and have no major health issues except for chronic rhinitis and asthma. I've had to use my rescue inhalers and a nebulizer so I know what it's like not to be able to breathe freely. Both my pulmonologist and ENT have suggested I get the vaccine.

What I decided to do was not to go to great lengths to get on any lists or try to get special favors to get in line. As soon as the vaccine was available, I got a text from Methodist Hospital (my primary care doctor is affiliated with it) that I would be contacted when I was eligible for the shot and not to call my doctor.

So on March 10 I'll get shot one. Larry, my husband, is in your camp about the vaccine and we're both respecting each other's decision.

Our area has never been as restricted or closed as some areas and we continue to dine out taking the safety precautions that are recommended.

Everyone is different and will react differently to the virus and the vaccine.

Look forward to your follow up.

Hi again Mike - of course I had to come and read your 1st post about covid after reading the other one! There are a number of us who could have retired years ago - but like you said - why. If we're still enjoying what we do, keep on going.
