Parenting is not easy, and when our kids are frustrated, it's sometimes hard to figure out what will motivate them.
Then, right when we think we've got it figured out, their interests or ages changes and we're left trying to solve new problems.
That's why, today, we're looking at five different ways to motivate your kids. Use these to reinforce good behaviors, encourage, support, and even love on your kids.
Experiment with what works and use a variety of strategies for different situations for best results.
1. Use Rewards
In most homes, screen time is coveted. So, my kids like a 30 minutes to extra screen time reward when they've earned it. But there are so many other options as well. We give coupons for things like "game night" and "pick your own dinner," and I love using this huge list of rewards for kids for all the ideas.
2. Give Them a Checklist
What's more satisfying than marking things off a list?
Give them a simple checklist to your kids for things that need to be done. Then, let them take control by checking items off at their own pace.
3. Give Extra Praise
When you see your child working hard, let them know that you're noticing. Sometimes just a little hi-5 or word of encouragement is all we need to motivate us forward.
4. Remind Them Where They Came From
When your child gets discouraged, remind him or her the progress that's been made. The other day, my daughter was discouraged with her reading. We talked about how she used to not be able to read a single word in that book, and the discussion brought up her confidence considerably.
5. Give Them Choices
Whether it's for healthy food or chores, sometimes the way to get kids inspired is to give them options. As long as both of the options are good, it doesn't really matter which on they pick. And their sense of freedom will help to them take ownership of the action.
In Conclusion
Kids are very much like adults. So, if you notice your motivation waning lately, try one of these strategies for yourself! Remind yourself how far you've come, add choices, use a checklist, or give yourself a healthy treat. It's never a bad thing to have extra motivation!
