Shedding Some Light…

Our Arctic air is gone but there is always the opportunity for any and all of us to lose power in our homes. And after learning today that our names (Kate and Larry) are on this year's List of Hurricane names, I told Larry that we need to be prepared for another hit this year!

At any rate, I wanted to share two items that enlightened our home during our power outage.

MPOWERD Luci Solar inflatable light

You can recharge this light using solar power or through another power source using a USB cord. We recharged ours in the car. There are different settings so you can choose how bright you need the light.

This was like having a small vanity lamp in our bathroom at night. I’ve seen them for around $25.00 on their website or try Amazon for one of their deals.

There is also a Luci light for around $54.00 that will also charge your device.

Luminar Outdoor Pop-up Lantern

What I like about this one is the price of $4.99 at Harbor Freight and that it uses 3 AA batteries. You can find ones similar to this one for more money and offering more lumens but at this price, you can have one for every family member and/or each room!!!

Our friend’s home in South Florida has a house generator and that is where we stayed during Hurricane Irma. However, not every room or light was on the generator. So some kind of flashlight is still handy.

There are many other brands on the market. I have one by Luminaid that I have not had a chance to try but it is like the one by MPOWERD.

This is good information to share.

Home generators are not common in our area.

Since the storm in TX we have been thinking and talking about solutions for what we could use should our electricity go out (more likely during the summer season/monsoon storms).  This is a great idea.....thanks Kathy!  We're also considering a in house generating system. I don't know much about those but I have this feeling I will learn, quickly!

Kind of a cool product and when the lights go out you will be happy you own them.

Kathy I invested in a 10,000W generator after losing power twice for 5 days each time in a three year period.  I have only lost power for more than a day, a couple of times since then, but it was one of the best investments I have made.

I experienced a little over a day of blackouts about a six weeks ago.  Fortunately, with candles and a wood burning fireplace, I was reasonably fine.  However, I have since considered getting a battery back-up to keep my cellphone charged in any future outages!

Hi Sham Reddy CRS you're very welcome!!!

Nina Hollander I've seen those!!!  Have to look into them.

Barbara Todaro we were lucky that our friends back in Florida had one installed and we stayed there during Hurricane Irma. They have to be maintained and thankfully Larry and the other Hurricane guest were able to fix some of the issues!!!

Hi Brian England that's Texas!  I'm not educated enough to be able to speak to what happened last week. I know that since Hurricane Harvey there has been a lot of activity focused on the many bayous and creeks by the Flood Control District.  I do know that suits have been filed.

Michael Jacobs drives most people around me crazy!!

Smart move Grant Schneider I can remember one year when there seemed to be a  lot of smaller hurricanes. We woke up thinking that the hurricane was going to hit the west coast of FL but by 11 am we discovered it was coming right at us. thankfully Larry had already tied off the boat because of the previous week's hurricane possibility.

Hi Sharon Lee What I like about the Luminar is that they use regular batteries. I want to get a few more.

Kat Palmiotti call me crazy but I've always had a flashlight by my bed.

Yikes Wayne Martin yes, get some!!!!!   I also don't like the idea of using candles.

Debbie Holmes I have a camping box too. I don't use candles only because of the fire hazard but would in a pinch.

Joan Cox I like the light that the MPOWERD gives!

Ron and Alexandra Seigel  Larry put small solar lights around parts of the garage and they give off quite a bit of light. I didn't know he invested in the company!

Rocky Dickerson I don't know what it is, but I love flashlights! We had several small ones and when we were in Florida during Hurricane irma we stayed at a friend's house. Even though there was a house generator, only certain areas had lights. I gave everyone those small flashlights just in case!

Smart move Sheri Sperry - MCNE® Thankfully our fireplace and water-heater are gas as is our grill. I wish our stove was, though. Oh yes, I remember Hurricane Carla too. I remembered looking out the front door at rain coming down at a slant.

And I agree- never count a Texan out. We help each other out and pitch in and yes, this will make us better.

I like them Roy Kelley but are expensive and use a lot of fuel!

Anna Banana Kruchten CRS CRB, Phoenix Broker call me and I can give you tips from what we learned when we stayed at our friend's house. Quickly though, depending upon the size of your house and generator, you have to pick and choose what to put on the system. And this requires a lot of fuel. During a hurricane when they were without power for over a week, they still have to ration what and when they used it, monitor the fuel, and make sure that their fuel provider could get to them if they ran out.

We had a whole house generator two houses ago. It was awesome. We had to have it because we couldn't afford to have our sump pump stop working in the basement. It not only ran the entire house, except for bathrooms, it ran all four of our driveway lights. LOL

Our current house is a different situation. If we lose power, we lose water (we have a well) and we have no cooking source because our stove is electric.

We can't do anything about the loss of water except to keep extra gallons of water on hand. We just bought a one-burner butane stove to have on hand for cooking and we bought a couple of rechargeable LED light bulbs that work when the power goes out.

Hi Kathy, Thank you for reminding me hurricane season is approaching. I probably would have forgotten it.

I checked the names. There are only two that scare me: PETER and WANDA.
