Not Taller

But Growing More Tolerant

It  has been some time since I have seen a growth chart let alone check my height.  Growing up, I never expected to be a giant, be an expert basketball player or be the one who is always called to reach something on the highest shelf without the use of my tippy-toe talent.

Once I acknowledged that, the world didn’t magically become easier but anticipation of experiences as well as establishing expectations in other areas could emerge.

One, in particular, continues...and while there have been setbacks on more than one occasion growing tolerant can be ongoing.  And growth spurts can still occur.

Hello Michael Jacobs

I am still growing in many ways after all these years ... taller is not among those ways.

As for growing more tolerant - that can be a good thing in many ways.

There are some things I am growing less tolerant of ... and of course, those things will never be published.

When I was a child, I used to get up on a chair and exclaim how tall I was.  Today,  I am still growing in many ways.  For me, it is not a matter of tolerance as much as not paying attention to things that encourage me to feel bad or want to critique, but to pay attention to the wealth of people and things that I appreciate.  The rest fades out of my view, they do not even need to be tolerated...they can just do what they do.  A

Kathleen Daniels, Probate & Trust Specialist - your comment makes me think of Alice Roosevelt Longworth.  Among her quotes:  If you haven't got anything nice to say about anybody, come sit by me.  I bet she was the life of the party.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - it's a balance thing for me.  Things come, things go --- it's a juggling act.  That's for sure.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel -  paying attention to the right things is a sure way to attract interest.

Morning Michael.

When I was growing up I had no expectations of being a ball player or professor.  I wanted to do one of two things, I did live live up to my expectations.  It was a good run of 29 years.

Hi Michael Jacobs,

I realize that "growing" is meant much differently in your post and I hope I can continue to grow more tolerant as time moves on.... But I am reminded just 2 days ago when I was checking my 5-year-old grandson's height to see if he could go down the swim slide at a hotel we were staying at.  I was surprised he was tall enough to make the cut!

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - I think grandparents may notice the growth spurts of chldren(in all forms) differently than their own parents.

Although I'm average height now, I was awkwardly tall as a child and I hated it.

Michael Jacobs - When it comes to tolerance, if I could make one BIG change to grocery stores, I would adjust the shelves so that short people don't have to wait for someone tall to pass through the aisles to get something down a shortie can't reach. It seems to me, all the products I need are on the top shelf, and if I can't reach the top shelf, or if it's so far in the back I can't reach, I still have to hang around and loiter in the aisles until a tall person walks by and eases my pain of trying to buy something I need. As for shopping on-line and having my groceries delivered, I say bah! humbug! I like my independence.

Just the other day I waited too long and had no patience. I had to go find someone to ask them to reach the eggs that were stacked up so high it was ridiculous. The good thing is, it seems to make young store employees feel like a giant and they look 10 x's larger than me as they smile and hand me my eggs or whatever...

Sharon Tara -while I haven't perfected it, I seem to practice awkwardness on a regular basis.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I understand and agree with you about online grocery shopping.   There are too many variables and obstacles to overcome in my opinion.  But I can see that many people are utilizing the service.

I think maturity often brings about more tolerance, and I don't mean the kind that comes with age. The kind that brings a self-awareness that allows us to accept so many varying views in life. There sure are plenty of them out there. As for tall, I'm 5'3".  I've accepted it,  but others seem to not be so tolerant and feel the need to comment on my petite size. Oh well.

Hi Michael! So, I had the exact opposite problem - I was always taller than everyone - until I reached high school and I was still taller than almost everyone! I was the one that was asked by my 4'10" grandmother to reach the high shelves for her!

And, you're so right - these lessons in life teach us problem solving, tolerance and so much more. They are the building blocks for adulthood and we continue to grow our entire adult lives - that is, if we allow ourselves to be open to learning!
