Read Across America Day  (Dr. Seuss Day) is March 2...What Are You Reading?

The ability for all people, young and old, to read has always been important to me and it should be for the future of our country. Help celebrate Read Across America (Dr. Seuss Day)

I could not blog without you guys

I could, but it would not be wise.

I read and write to prove I am

A whole lot more than green eggs and ham.

You can read why it is so important here but in a nutshell, when I was administering psychological tests to recently released prisoners, I had to first give them a test to see if they were able to read at or above the 3rd-grade level. It was apparent to me that many who had been incarcerated could not read at this level. How in the world can you function successfully if you cannot read?!

Beyond the ability to read is the desire and enjoyment of reading. This is what Read Across America (Dr. Seuss Day) is about...motivating our children (and others) to read.

Some Things YOU Can Do…

~Read to your children every night

~Go book shopping with your children or children in your life ( you can do this virtually)

~Tape yourself reading a book and share it with a young person in your life

~Tune into KitLit TV

~Make reading FUN!!

One more tidbit...if you choose to read out loud to someone or to yourself, check out these benefits!!!

So...what are you reading???

This video is from 2013 when I read out loud to a classroom for Delray Reads Day!

Hello Kathy - This has been a day I, and many others, have celebrated here(and elsewhere) over the years.   It's Seussical and it continues to be powerful.  And magical.  In multiple ways.

Hello Kathy, Reading is so important and think it starts at a young age of reading to your kids.

Hi Kathy,
It seems like everything in life would be difficult if you can't read.

Honestly, I don't remember anyone reading to me as a child. I didn't really enjoy reading until after leaving school. Surprisingly, I am a good reader and enjoy it now.

Kathy it is amazing that the "Cancel Culture" has determined that 6 of Dr. Seuss book are now racist.  What next???

Wayne Martin you are both creating memories....that's what it's about.

Grant Schneider when my friend's children were younger, I would take them to lunch or dinner and we stopped by the book store for books. Loved it.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel I wouldn't go anywhere without a book...easy to do on my iPhone.

Buzz Mackintosh you're preaching to the choir!!! I did read today that the foundation that owns the rights to Dr Seuss made this decision. (which I am sure was because of the Cancel Culture. )

I have always loved Dr. Seuss from the very first book that was read to my class in the 2nd grade.  It was "Bartholomew and the 500 Hats."  It made me kind of sad today when I learned several of his books will no longer be published because of material within them that is now considered racist or insensitive.

Michael Jacobs we have to empower people by first giving them the ability to read!!!

Will Hamm I agree and I love to see children with a book in their hands.

Carol Williams I'm glad you found your love of reading.  My friend's daughter always had her nose in a book when she was younger. That's a sight I love to see.

Rocky Dickerson A Seussical response!!!

George Souto it scares me to think of it.

Myrl Jeffcoat I agree. I was listening to someone who said instead of banning the books, use it as a teaching moment for your children. That makes more sense.

And thank you for the feature in your group.

Yes, that's my thought too.  Use it as a teaching moment.  I was watching "The View" today, and many of the ladies shared that sentiment!

I have read Dr. Seuss so many times to my grand-kids; I can almost say them by heart. I told one the other night that she would soon be reading to me every night Kathy Streib

Morning Kathy.

I saw on TV where some are trying to get rid of the books by Dr. Seuss, what a pity

It is so sad when you think of how children get pushed through the school system without learning to read - and then people are surprised when those children fail as young adults

How does reading out loud count as exercising your body?  Everything on that list makes sense to me except that one.

Some of my favorite moments have been reading to my children and to my grandchildren.

I remember being in Europe and not being able to read the signs or communicate with the locals. It was so frustrating, but just a short time while on vacation. I can only imagine how horrible it must be to try and survive without the ability to read all the time.
