Head Above the Clouds & An Opportunity for Kindness!

One of our favorite easy and very long runs is Homeward Bound.  It is also at an impressive altitude of 9,570 feet as pictured above. You can see the clouds and in the distance are the other mountains and ski resorts of the Wasatch Mountains.

As we were gazing, a couple asked us if the run to the lodge was easy, and we told them of a trail that leads directly there.  The wife had taken off her skis, and said to us:  "If I only could figure out how to turn and stop, I would be OK!"  It was her first time on skis!

Ron asked her, if she would like us to inform the chair lift operators to send up the ski patrol with a toboggan.  "No she said!"  She was going to brave it.  I suggested getting a private lesson, the ski school is great here!  Our nephew learned the basics in a two hour lesson.

We sped down the hill and Ron informed the chair lift operator.  We knew there was no way, she was going to get down.

About 45 minutes later, I noticed the ski patrol skiing next to me with her strapped in a toboggan, and getting her on the downward chair to the main lodge, where can she can walk off the lift with her own two feet!  Opportunities for kindness abound, it makes our world better.

Ron had gone ahead of me, to check in for lunch. He was delighted to hear that she was safe. I hope she does take a lesson!

Ron and Alexandra- that was so very thoughtful!!!! I took lessons when I tried to ski but what got to me was the altitude. I had to get a young kid to help me remove my skis and I was able to walk down to the main area. Larry and I still laugh at it.

Hi Alexandra,
When I first learned to snow ski, I did take lessons and had a few experiences of wondering if I'd make it down the hill. I learned to be a master at side slipping so no matter what situation I got myself into I knew I could get down without breaking my neck or any other part of my body.  LOL    Unfortunately, I didn't start skiing until I was about 20 years old so never got particularly good at it. Children tend to have no fear when they learn. I was not a child anymore. I had a job and responsibilities. I was a good mid-level skier but knew better than to tackle the Black Diamonds.

Living in Vail I can't tell you how many people I've helped out over the years.  You know if they keep doing what they're doing them coming down in a 'tray' as we used to call them.  First timer....what on earth was she doing up there.  I remember my first time on a double black run and it was like......now what?  Thankfully I had an idea of what and how to handle it.

Kindness always is the way.....:)

That was thoughtful Alexandra. Some will try and brave it, but it took an act of kindness to get off the run... Very Nice!

First of all, what a beautiful photo! It took my breath away!

Second, I'm sure she appreciated your kindness. I wouldn't have known that was even an option.

Third, I'm thinking lessons would have been a good idea before the first attempt to ski down!

Hi Alexandra... at the end of the day, what does it cost to be kind? Not much at all. From you photo, I would have been terrified to go down that hill, I can tell you that. I'd have taken you up on your offer to help in a NY minute.

I'm happy you informed them of her plight. Heading up the mountain without the basic skills to slow down or stop isn't the best decision. Glad it ended well for her - and lessons sound like a perfect solution. And more time on the bunny hill to get more proficient.

I am glad that she did not brave it, sounds like she would have been being carried off on a stretcher rather than a toboggan.

Hello Alexandra and Ron - opportunities are abundant.   And when that opportunity includes kindness, that is definitely a part of the total package.  Always a nice gift.  To give and receive.

Hello Ron and Alexandra Seigel, being kind, thoughtful, helpful is a lot easier than the opposite, yet, many literally go out of their way to do exactly that. Why? Well, that's the million-dollar question.
