So, they say that over 90% of all agents that enter the business never make it past their first year. That is something that always bugged me. After I got my momentum in this business, I then started helping new agents get the down low on what this business is really all about. They appreciate the answers I had for their questions and I appreciate their enthusiasm. And I find there are things I tell many new agents coming for advice. Here are things I usually cover:
Being early is on time. Being on time is late. Being late is inexcusable. There are plenty of agents that make excuses for being late. Show that you are the professional and don’t be one of them.
Be prepared. Do your research well in advance. Fill out copies of agreements for clients that don’t exist just to get the experience. Practice what you will say with other agents so that you don’t freeze up in a real conversation.
Dress for the position that you desire. Dress to impress the unexpected client walking through the door. Don’t be in running shorts and a tank top. Dress so that if your best client walked through the door and met you for the first time, you would make a favorable impression.
The tail doesn’t wag the dog. Your doctor doesn’t allow you to tell him how he is going to do his business. Likewise, you need to be the professional and do not allow people to dictate to you how you will do your professional business.
SW4. Some Will. Some Won’t. So What. Someone’s Waiting. If you continually look for motivated clients, then you don’t have to put up with the games that unmotivated clients play.
Treat your business like a business. Businesses run P&L statements. They examine expenses. They budget. They make projections. They make a cost benefit analysis on major purchases. A business that doesn’t watch it’s money, soon goes out of business. Also a business that has a challenge or a setback, will seek to learn from it and create a system or a method not to be in that position again.
You will be more refreshed by working 100% for 40 hours a week, than if you work 50% for 60 hours a week. When you are working, work full out. When you are “playing”, play full out and enjoy it to the max. I also recommend finding an agent that you can trust where you will watch their files and they will watch your files if you need play time. Being able to hit that “off” switch is highly important to renewing one’s self.
Okay, so I have babbled about what I advise new agents. How about you? What do you advise new agents to help them get on the right track?
