I was listening to a report on the radio tonight about how gas prices are changing our work world. It was kind of interesting and confirmed a post I made about 2 weeks ago.

The report said that companies are shortening their work weeks for some of their workers with long communtes in order to keep them from finding jobs closer to home. The employees increase their hours to 10 hours a day for the days they work which makes up for the extra day off.

I know many people have been doing this for quite some time. However, this is the first I've heard of it for the sake of saving money on gas.

Here's why I'm posting this on Active Rain:

While I'm not sure this will become widespread and that it won't go away when (if) gas prices come back down, it got me thinking about what this means for our industry. If people suddenly had an extra day off each week here are some ways we could benefit:

1. Traffic would become much less of a nightmare. I posted on this a couple of weeks ago - I think it's already happening. Today traffic was absolutely amazing. I'm sure vacations and school being out is part of the reason.
2. Getting time with our clients would be much easier.
3. Fewer night and weekend appointments would give us more time with our families and for other activities.

Three cheers for high gas prices!

Yes, things are changing.  Have you heard of Stay-cations.  I grew up with those.  I guess my parents were just ahead of their time.

Pam,

Great point. I forgot to mention staycations. I've been hearing about those a lot in the news lately.

I live in sunny Southern California. People come from all over the world to vacation in my immediate area. I've always kind of laughed that people around here fly to other resort locations in other parts of the world when we already live in paradise. Of course that didn't stop me from going to Hawaii last April.

Thanks for the comment.

Have a good one,

Dennis

We used to have a lot of staycations when I was a kid (I lived in Jamaica) so we were never too far from the beach.

I suggest going for the GAS WAR, what do we have to lose? Don't purchase Exxon or Mobil for 1 year, if the price of GAS does drop great, if not, inflation was going to hgappen anyway. Let's see if COKE had a great CEO. It's worth a try.

Dennis, Your blog has placed a refreshing positive spin to the high gas prices.  There are certainly good things may result with a staycation.
