Don't throw out those CFL's folks!

Home Depot announced today that they have launched a recycling program for compact Florescent bulbs at all 1,973 stores nationwide.
According to the press release this free service is the first such offering made so widely available by a retailer in the United States and offers customers additional options for making environmentally conscious decisions from purchase to disposal. This same program was launched by Home Depot Canada in November 2007.

To take part in this program one simply takes the bulbs to the associates at Home Depots Customer Service desk where they will accept them and pass them on to a environmental management company for disposal.  In another step Home Depot will also be switching all in store incandescent bulbs to CFL bulbs by this fall.

On a side note I think it is important add that Ikea has been doing this for a very long time.  They just aren't as heavily dispersed across the country.  So if an Ikea is closer to you, save some gas and drop your bulbs off there.

Great post and I have several that need to be replaced too.  I didn't think about them breaking and polluting as a real problem, but makes sense.

Andrew - I had not heard the announcement. Thank you for sharing the news. It will make it much easier for us to properly dispose of the CFLs now.
