On March 17, 2021, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits declined 10.8% to 1,682,000 units in February of 2021 from 1,886,000 units in January of 2021, but rose 17.0% from 1,438,000 in February of 2020. Single family building permits declined 10.0% to a rate of 1,143,000 units in February of 2021, from 1,270,000 units in January of 2021, and there were 495,000 multifamily building permits issued in February of 2021.
Nationwide housing starts dropped 13.3% to 1,421,000 units in February of 2021, from 1,584,000 units in January of 2021 and decreased 9.3% from 1,567,000 units in February of 2020. Single family starts lower 8.5% to a rate of 1,040,000 units in February of 2021 from 1,136,000 in January of 2021, and there were 372,000 multifamily building starts in February of 2021.
Nationwide housing completions higher 2.9% to 1,362,000 units in February of 2021 from 1,324,000 units in January of 2021, and decreased 5.0% from 1,297,000 units in February of 2010. Single family completions gained 2.8% to a rate of 1,042,000 units in February of 2021, from 1,014,000 units in January of 2021, and there were 314,000 multifamily completions in February of 2021.
