(No) Time to Blog

timeThere is no doubt that blogging requires a daily discipline. For many including myself, blogging does not come easy. I am not a writer by trade and as a student hated writing, but I feel as if I have come a long way.

Since we all have a full time job, blogging is a part-time venture. How much time do you invest in a single blog post? Blogging can be like the game of baseball you don’t have to hit a homerun every time you are at bat. Blogging is also a numbers game. The more quality blog posts you produce the higher your visibility and traction with your target audience. There is no doubt that the effort invested in collecting your thoughts and getting your blog post eloquently written takes time.

So I ask you “How long does your typical blog post take?”

Bunt: less than 15 minutes

Single: less than half and hour

Double: less than an hour

Triple: less than 2 hours

Homerun: more than 2 hours

Best Wishes!

Very interesting way to measure "blog time" ... I like the baseball concept.  Sometimes responding to comments can actually take longer than preparing the post ... that's when you know you've hit a home run!

I think about a topic and move it around for A COUPLE OF DAYS SOMETIMES IN MY MIND. sO WHEN IT COMES TO POSTING IT IT IS USUALLY A FUNCTION OF MY FINGER TIME ON THE KEYS PLUS SPELL CHECK. hOWEVER READING BLOGS i THINK IS MORE CONSTRUCTIVE AS YOU MAY LEARN SOMETHING YOU DO NOT KNOW AS OPPOSED TO POSTING ABOUT WHAT YOU DO NO. Also I obviouosly do not look up from the key board enough. Sorry about the caps

I believe that it depends on the topic and the audience.  I have posts that take no time at all and others that take hours of planning, preparing, and putting together.  I find that the more pictures are involved, the less likely I am to ever get it done.

IMNJ,

I am a person who gets too wrapped up in grammar and spelling, so blogging is a two hour+ proposition for me. And I agree with Jan that responding to comments is more involved, sometimes, than the composition of the blog itself, but very satisfying!

What has helped cut down the process for me is to begin a draft in MS Word and save it. When time allows, I add to it, or finish it and post it.

Most of my time spending blogging would be a single or bunt. There are times when I have lots of free time and can spend longer doing this.

This is probably my biggest issue as I learn how to do this. I start w/an idea and WAY too much time later....I still haven't finished.

Jan - Thanks, I am glad the baseball anology made sense!

Charlie - I agree, the nice thing about AR is you can share your experiences and learn from the experiences and expertise of others!

Frances - A process helps. I also keep a active word document of ideas and blubs for future posts.

Bill, Matt & Connie - those bunts will go a long way if you sting them together. The beauty is that you don't have to hit a homerun everytime your at the plate.

I guess writing blogs comes easy for some and not see easy for others. I feel you need to plan time to read other's blogs and time to write our own...so I can definitely relate to trying to find the right time to blog. But I will say, it is definitely worth the time spent here.

Blogging can be a 30 minute ordeal to days...just depends on the topic.  Sometimes I add to posts for days before I post it.  Other times, I am able to sit down and just spit it out.  Alot of it depends on my attitude that day.  Today, I could just spit them out, I am hyped about biz and just want to share it with the world.  lol

I get ideas as I go about my day to day business, but to actually put it together takes about an hour- my spelling is atrooshious (Just kidding), so I prepare it all in Microsoft Word first.

Very Interesting results. I take less than 30 min. on average. I guess i'm a singles kind of guy!

I am not a great writer by any means but I do enjoy blogging because I see the meaningful business and connections it brings. I would guess my posts take aound 30-45 minutes to create.

INMJ,, My goal is to get it to less than 30 minutes.  I don't want to spend hours on it.  I'm getting better.  I think that you can write a substantial, effective blog in 30 minutes.

Thanks,

I usually have an idea and make a note to come back to it later.  I have been working in word but I am looking at the MS Livewriter to try this weekend.  Like the poll widget...

If an idea hits I just write it, maybe not the best grammar or spelling, I just type, no time line, but I know I need to be more regular about it.

It really depends on the topic. Sometimes, it takes a lot of time to go out and take orginal photos, edit them and get them set up on the website in an attractive manner.

That is an interesting break down.  I was a writer in college and have a degree in English and I guess as a result my blogging is not so time consuming.  I don't find a need to include pictures or change the font/color tho which would make my entries take way too long each. thanks for the post.

I'm bunting around the bases,  Most often I'll have a topic in mind and then just type it out quickly.  I've lost too many posts to timeouts by overthinking them and then have to start from scratch.  Now I just fire it up there quickly.

I think reading and commenting takes considerably more time than the posting does.  But that is how you make the connections and learn so it is time well spent.  As for the posts.  When I have an idea that seems like a good one, it generally just flows.
