Laljl Singh was born in Jaunpur, United Provinces, British India back in 1947. He received his primary education in a government school. He attended high school in the nearby village of Pratapganj. After graduation, he attended the Banaras Hindu University. In 1964, he graduated with a B.Sc. degree.
In 1966, eh scored the highest marks in his Master’s degree las and won the Banaras Hindu Gold Medal for standing first in order of merit. He received his doctorate in 1971. He received the INSA Medal for Young Scientists in 1974, for his research in the field of cytogenetics
(the study of inheritance in relation to the structure and function of chromosomes). He died in 2017, he was 70.
What you may not know about Laljl is that he is considered as the “Father of Indian DNA fingerprinting”. He founded the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics in 1995, the Laboratory for the Conservation of Endangered Species in 1998 and the Genome Foundation in 2004.
