Please help Charles and Jacqulyn Richey.

I received an email today from Max Chirkov over at IBSTeam.net (you've seen his links at the bottom of AR's Directory pages) asking for help on behalf of Charles and Jacqulyn.  Charles has been diagnosed with Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a rare disorder that attacks part of the peripheral nervous system.  Over a period of days or sometimes weeks GBS causes muscle weakness and eventually complete paralysis.

The good news is Charles is currently in the ICU undergoing treatment, and while "GBS" can be life threatening, Charles was diagnosed early and patients most of the time recover with few ongoing issues.  While his recovery might take a while, it's my impression that he's going to be OK.

Now an ICU is an extremely expensive place to undergo treatment.  He's also going to need ongoing physical therapy.  Without medical insurance the need for support is going to be high.   Max over at IBSTeam.net  is taking up a Paypal collection, to help Charles and his wife Jacqulyn cover some of the costs of treatment.

I've known Charles for some time, he's a major impact on this community.  He went out of his way to help me work through things when ActiveRain was growing.  I know I'm not the only one he's helped directly or indirectly.  Given that he has touched so many of us, even a small contribution from the many people that know him will add up to a lot, and go a long way toward helping.  So if you can make a contribution even a small one please visit Max's page to do so. Max also has more information about what's going on if you'd like more information.

___

And please help yourself too.

For many of us that are self employed, I realize medical insurance is most often a low priority concern.  It seems if we're healthy now, there's no need for it.  In my own case, I grew up with entrepreneurial parents, and went into entrepreneurial work myself, medical insurance was never a priority. I've spent most of my life without insurance.

Through many medical incidents involving people I know, I've come to see that medical issues can suddenly hit any of us.  I now have my own "catostrophic" insurance plan.   I'm in good health and rarely need to see a doctor,  when I do I can pay out of pocket.  I have this plan for the unanticipated concerns.

I would encourage each of you without coverage, to take a look at what options might be available to you.  Even if you don't expect to need medical attention having a coverage plan in place is in my opinion a good idea.

Thank you for helping to spread the word Caleb!

Matt and I saw Charles last winter when we were in Vegas for PubCon - we had a few drinks a laughs and everything seemed great. I also talked to charles every month on the phone and he always was in a good health. I think this syndrome is something no one can ever expect - this is very rare, but can happen to any of us.

Please visit this page to make a donation, you can get an HTML widget to post in your blogroll to help to spread the word, and also, you can leave your best wishes in the forum for Charles to read when he gets better.

Thank you everyone for your help!

Wow Caleb,

Thanks for the mention and the thoughts and prayers!  And, thank you for your side-note about having insurance... I hope everyone who reads this will consider getting health insurance if they don't already have it!

The more we can do to spread the word, the better!

God Bless Charles and Jacqui, and may he recover quickly and fully.

Hey Caleb,

How do we get a post like this to the front page of AR?  I see a lot of them there, just never knew what the criteria was for getting there...

Mathew,

Thanks for the question, I'm no longer with AR, so I can't put this on the front myself.  I've let a lot of people know, hopefully they can help get the word out.

Thanks so much for helping spread the word Caleb!

I don't know how much effect it has, but if the folks commenting here could go up and click the little red flag under Calebs post, you can request that it be "featured". It will get MUCH more exposure on AR that way.

So sorry to hear about Charles.  He's a good guy and deserves the absolute best treatment.  Hopefully dollars from the group here on AR will help him get through this tough time.

WOW, I don't know about this situation. However, I have to be honest (as alway's) and tell you, I had kidney cancer in 2001 and no one will insure me for 10 years...so I agree.

Jay and Francy...I think it's featured.

I'll pray for them and for you tonight...tough situation...thank goodness it was caught early.

Caleb- nice to see you even though your message isn't such a good one.  Nice of you to spread the word, and I am sure that many will heed the call now that this has the gold star :)  Actually I found it on TLW's links......

Hope all is well with you.

@Jay: Thank you.  I clicked the flag and wrote a mini-series novel in my remarks.

@Caleb: Thank you again for taking the lead here at AR!

Charles is the kind of guy that will ask you what you need, and never ask for anything in return.  So, since Charles is the man he his (and has been to many of us) we need to make a difference in his life (Yes, I have dealt with worse... my mom and I are fighting the fight of life with her brain cancer that was diagnosed in the early spring of 2007).  But, Charles is the Webmaster of his wife's Las Vegas real estate site, so it only seems natural to link to their site with the anchor text of your choice if you cannot donate any money right now.

On that note (knowing full and well how this market has hit all of us agents in the wallet), if you can not contribute money, contribute by adding the html code from this post to your Web sites and blogs so that others in your sphere of influence can donate if they have the means.  Just do it!  It's not like you need to leave it there for the rest of your career... the drive will end on it's own once the 'grass roots movement' that we have all started together ends.

I know all outgoing links from comments here are "rel=no-follow".  But, as an example, take a look at my main (flagship) Web site and see how easily the html code for the donate button can integrate into your site or blog: http://www.PhoenixHomes.com

Any thoughts on this or concerns about this?  Reply to me directly through my http://www.ActiveRain.com/phoenix profile.

God Bless you Charles! :-)

Sincerely,

Matt Pellerin - Realtor

Caleb, I read this on Sellisus rss this AM, my prayers are with Charlie and Jacqulin. I donated what I could, hope it helps.

We have health coverage because my husband is a teacher. Before I was paying 930 per month and that was 5 years ago. I don't know how people do it, when they are self employed.

My oldest son had Guillain-Barre syndrome when he was about three years old, and I'll never forget the phrase "ascending assymetrical paralysis of the motor muscle nerves".  I also remember the doctors saying there was no treatment (at that time), but that it goes away about the same pace it comes on.  In other words, If the paralysis moves quickly, it leaves relatively quickly - if the paralysis progresses slowly, there's a much slower recovery.  The greatest risk, I remember, is paryalysis reaching non-voluntary muscles such as the lungs, and that's why the hospitalization, so it can be monitored and breathing can be assisted by machines 'til the recovery starts.  If he's in ICU, perhaps that's the status now.

Guillain-Barre synrome is extremely scary to go through but, fortunately, it is rarely fatal if the patient is hospitalized and helped through that crisis period.  The fact it's not usually fatal is one of the reasons it's hard to get funding for medical research to verify its cause and cure.  Recovery can be lengthy and requires physical therapy - If he's without insurance, he'll need and appreciate any help our community can provide.

My father had this GB in combination with a staff infection after recovering from open heart..it is a horrible, horrible disease...paralysis to the swallowing muscles....etc. is devastating...We would be without food and shelter before we went without insurance and while we will certainly help...also with thoughts and prayers...I urge them to explore every avenue perhaps thru the hospital social worker for financial assistance.

Caleb, so good to see you here on AR. I've missed you something terrible! Hope you are well and happy.

My thougts and prayers certainly go out to Charles and Jackie. What a horrible situation to be in and it can happen to anyone at anytime.

Health insurance is sky high and many Realtors just can't afford insurance during this scarce time. We will all do what we can and please pass on to Charles that our prayers are with him.

Sorry to hear about your friend.  Hopefully, those without insurance take this as a heads up that they really should make it a priority.  Being in ICU is bad enough, but knowing you face financial ruin if you recover is not good at all!

Thanks for the post Caleb.

Max, Matt, and I have been trying very hard to get the word out to fellow Realtors and the response has been amazing. Many people that don't even know Charles are stepping up and helping, and everyone that knows him seems to be taking it upon themselves to help spread the word and raise money for Charles. This is amazing and it's great to see so many people help out in a friends time of need.

Want to say Thank You!!! to everyone that is helping.

Greg, thank you.  I think it's going to take a lot of time.

Broker Bryant your welcome, and thank you. I hope we can get him some help.

Max and Matthew, you guys are awesome for all the work  you are doing for him.  I never would have thought of putting together the Paypal box Max thank you.

Jay you're also awesome at helping put these things together I'm sure it will mean a lot to the Richeys

He is a good guy Kristal Kraft, thank you.  I know he does so much to support what I do and it's appreciated.  Hopefully what we can put together will help.

Thanks Mana, you too.

Karen, thanks for sharing your experiences.  The insurance issues is something I hope we can get out to more people who aren't insured as well.  It's expensive, but sometimes there are options to get individual insurance that aren't quite so costly.

Kathy, thank you.  I am hoping so.

Bob & Carolin  Thanks for the welcome, and thank you for your support.

Randy, good to hear from you.  I'm glad you have coverage.  I hope we can help some other members find some options while we help Charles.

Scott you're so right it can happen to ANYONE.

Missy Caulk, I saw Joe's post as well.  Hopefully we can get this message going further.  930 a month for insurance??? incredible.

Margaret, wow, thanks for sharing your son's experience.  It means a lot to me personally to be able to read it.

Sally and David again, thanks for sharing your father's experience.  Hopefully these stories let everyone know that it can happen to any of us.

Mike, thank you.

You're welcome Glenn, as I recall you introduced Charles to AR.

Gena, Thank you and the same to you :).  It is sky-high.  I am foruntate in that my high deductible individual plan is only about 100$ a month.  I'm sure it's more difficult depending upon where you live.

Norma, it sure would be nice.  Thank you.

Hope Agreed, thank you.

Kathleen, thanks for you kind words, and sharing the story about your friend.

Renee, Charles does give a lot.  Hopefully he sees some return.  I didn't know abou the dog rescue, thanks!

Ken, I saw that you've been working on this.  I'm sure Charles and Jacqulyn will appreciate all that you, Max, and Matt are doing for them.  It is amazing to see all the support from all these people.  Thank you.

Please remember everyone Max's widget is available to easily post in a blog, I've posted it on my blog sidebar.  It's not too difficult and hopefully it can provide some support for the Richeys.

Thanks again everyone.

Caleb Charles is one of those people that helps everyone without asking anything in return. When Matt called me about his condition I knew that we had to do something. Charles deserves all the help that we can give and more. I consider him a friend and will do what it takes to make sure he is taken care of during his time of need.

Max's post shows a progression chart and we aren't even close to the first round goal. We really need people to step up and give something. Seriosly anything will help, don't be shy about sending small amounts. In the end it all adds up to helping keep a roof over Charles' head and food on the table.

Thanks Ken.  I handn't seen Max's Chart.  And thanks for saying DON'T BE SHY ABOUT SENDING SMALL AMOUNTS. As everyone must know we are counting on a little from a lot of people.  Please send a contribute some amount if you can and spread the word is the idea.

If case people are like me and can't/don't access paypal (long story), I sent a check to Jacqulyn's office at:

Thanks again Ken, let's keep this going.

Thanks to Charles I've finally got my Paypal Account working. Not bad after 8 years! Anyhow according to Max's chart we are 25% of the way there for the first round, with 29 donors on the list. That's a good start, but more small donations are what we need. Thanks for spreading the word people.
