Ask An Ambassador: This Isn't The Blog You're Looking For

This isn't the blog you're looking for...

Or is it??

*******************************************************************************

Blogging takes on many forms, as unique as the writer.

I've got my own particular approach and there are other bloggers in the Rain that you wouldn't need the header section to easily identify the writer.

Whether my blog IS what you're looking for totally depends upon what you're looking for.

Pure entertainment?  I'm not the best source.

You're a consumer looking for low maintenance living options in the Greater Cincinnati area?  Let's talk patio homes and condos, somewhere in my blog posts I've probably got exactly what you're looking for, and if not, a quick phone call and I can probably answer your questions.

Over the years what I've chosen to write about has altered significantly.  Early on I'd have touched on most any topic just to develop the habit of blogging.  Many posts that never had a chance of generating a single consumer phone call were fashioned and released to the wild, and while they may have provided me points, they were kind of pointless in the grand scheme of developing business.

Over time (and thanks to some willing teachers in the Rain), I learned what would work and what wouldn't work for my particular market and my specific personality.  YMMV of course, but for me, targeting our patio home niche, new construction, subdivisions and other long tail search terms are what cause my phone to ring.

The more you understand your target audience and what THEY need, the better the odds of your blog becoming what they ARE indeed looking for.

You can mix in whatever you want (for the most part), as long as the strength of your blog is providing what that audience is looking for.

And once you find that audience, you just may be able to selectively wave your hand at some people that give you that red flag feeling.  Not every contact is worth pursuing.

Your last sentence pretty well sums up my philosophy.
Not every contact is worth pursuing.

I have always chosen to focus on MY audience.

I'll provide some help to people seeking rentals, investment properties, etc., but it's strictly over the phone.  Those aren't my target markets, so I'll point them to someone that can better assist.  I only have so many hours to work with and it needs to be with clients that I can best help.

Good morning Bill. Like Carol Williams, I agree not every contact is worth pursuing. And learning to choose wisely is an ongoing challenge. Enjoy your day.

Variety is the spice of life they say but blogging is really for business. You're trying to help customers get a maintenance free lifestyle.

Much of the "just for fun" stuff I would have written before would no longer make it to the keyboard now.  Limited time to blog so I best make the most of it when I do.

Hi Liz and Bill - my takeaway here is that you must find your niche and write about it.

I don't know that it's possible to be all things to all people, so a niche enables us to reach a desired target audience.

Wise advice, Bill, as you have shared in various ways in recent years. Knowing who you want to appeal to and sharing posts that address the needs and interest of that target market will likely be most fruitful.

It's a topic that I'll most likely keep revisiting.  Find what works for a person and their market, and keep working it.

I agree, people at AR taught us way back.  Sticking with your niche is what works.  Patio homes for you, pet friendly for me.

Thank you for reminding me/us  that there is value in getting in the habit of posting on our blogs even if they are not perfect.

It takes a bit to learn what makes the phone ring and what doesn't.    In my case, I need to start doing more local, niche related  types of topics again.

Apr 01, 2021 10:14 AM
Liz and Bill Spear

That's the beauty of niche posts, if you're providing information no one else does and it's what the consumer wants, it doesn't have to be perfect to still do the job.

Hi Bill- I agree with your point. And, I remember your early local posts as well as when you began to target the patio homes buyer in your area. Know your target first!

I know heavy local event type posts work for some people, but for me it was a lot of calls of the wrong kind, so I shifted.

Hi Bill,

Great post and of course you are right..know your audience, focus on providing good content that the consumer is looking for and you will have calls! Of course not everyone of them you will want to pursue but you can pick and choose.

We had a cold internet lead (not from our own sites this week) that had a name from our past, someone we did not want to work with again.  Time wasters are to be avoided.

I think it's too bad when agents think they are the best choice to serve all the audience out there. How is that even possible? Bottom line, I like your style. D

I know there are things I'm not a good fit for.  Investors?  Nope.  Horse farms?  Not really.  Downtown Cincinnati?  I barely know where to park.  But give me "regular" residential and/or low maintenance living and I can take care of their needs.
