National Fair Housing Month ~ Reflection on the Past
Real Estate Agents are well versed in The Fair Housing Act having had numerous classes on it in annual continuing education courses. I believe that most of us don't think about it a lot because we operate living by the golden rule..do unto others as you would have them do unto you and seeing all people as equal. When we live that way, we are not going to discriminate against anyone based upon the protected areas of:
- Race
- Color
- National Origin
- Religion
- Sex
- Familial Status
- Disability
OR based upon other areas that separate us into groups such as type of jobs that we hold (skills jobs vs executive type jobs), tall vs short, glamour, wealth, hair color, influential positions, ... you get the gist of it. I know you do because you treat all fairly with equal opportunities too!
Sadly, though, there was and continues to be a need for Fair Housing Laws because not everyone does live by the golden rule.
April is National Fair Housing Month! Fifty-three (53) years ago,on April 11, 1968, then President Lyndon B Johnson signed the Fair Housing Legislation and it became law.
An excellent discussion of the Fair Housing Law can be found on the HUD website. The law is discussed in plain language so it can be clearly understood hence there is no excuse for breaking the law!
The Fair Housing Bill passed the Senate by a very slim margin, on April 4, 1968, the day that Martin Luther King was fatally shot and killed at the age 39. The House of Representatives passed the bill on April 10th and President Johnson signed it into law the next day. It was an expansion of Civil Rights Legislation which was a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
Let's join together this month in reflecting back to te why we have Fair Housing Laws and remember that we're all just people hopefully living by the Golden Rule to treat others as we want to be treated!
