National Fair Housing Month ~ Reflection on the Past

Real Estate Agents are well versed in The Fair Housing Act having had numerous classes on it in annual continuing education courses.  I believe that most of us don't think about it a lot because we operate living by the golden rule..do unto others as you would have them do unto you and seeing all people as equal.  When we live that way, we are not going to discriminate against anyone based upon the protected areas of:

  • Race
  • Color
  • National Origin
  • Religion
  • Sex
  • Familial Status
  • Disability

OR based upon other areas that separate us into groups such as type of jobs that we hold (skills jobs vs executive type jobs), tall vs short, glamour, wealth, hair color, influential positions, ... you get the gist of it.  I know you do because you treat all fairly with equal opportunities too!

Sadly, though, there was and continues to be a need for Fair Housing Laws because not everyone does live by the golden rule.

April is National Fair Housing Month!  Fifty-three (53) years ago,on April 11, 1968, then President Lyndon B Johnson signed the Fair Housing Legislation and it became law.

An excellent discussion of the Fair Housing Law can be found on the HUD website.  The law is discussed in plain language so it can be clearly understood hence there is no excuse for breaking the law!

The Fair Housing Bill passed the Senate by a very slim margin, on April 4, 1968, the day that Martin Luther King was fatally shot and killed at the age 39. The House of Representatives passed the bill on April 10th and President Johnson signed it into law the next day. It was an expansion of Civil Rights Legislation which was a follow-up to the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Let's join together this month in reflecting back to te why we have Fair Housing Laws and remember that we're all just people hopefully living by the Golden Rule to treat others as we want to be treated!

It shouldn't be a difficult thing, right?  But so often legislation must be place to bring about right and punish wrong.

Judi it does not seem like that much time has passed since that legislation was put in place.  Time does fly.

Right!  It seems like fairly new legislation but far from it.  That might speak to me getting older...time goes by faster and faster!

Hi Judi- and I too am glad to see you back. It's sad there had to be legislation for Fair Housing when the original rule...the Golden Rule... should have been enough.

Good morning Judi. Sad to think we need this type of legislation, yet so glad we have it for those who refuse to live it. Enjoy your day.

Isn't that the truth!  There seems to be a need to legislate kindness!

Hi Judi,

You hit the nail on the head right in the beginning.  Live by the Golden Rule.  I have only had 1 client over the years that I have had to remind them of the Fair Housing Act. I dropped this client after the first day.

Hi Judi,

So glad to see you posting again. I have missed you. Great choice of a topic to write about. Too bad we have to have legislation to remind of to practice the golden rule.

It is interesting how the rules and regulations have evolved over time. I recall my real estate instructor (in the 80's) teaching about steering. He told us that in years past it was considered a good practice to help people find homes in communities with others of their race or religion. By the 80's it was illegal to do so, even when they asked you to.

Unfortunately, when we have corruption in our leaders from many of our educators, politicians media and corporations who mislead and misinform our children, students and citizens about social and racial injustice, discriminating attitudes will always be a challenge that could IMO eventually lead to socialism.

Hopefully, we'll see a swing back to fearlessness, respectfulness and responsibility for our actions. Thanks for sharing an invaluable history lesson. We need more of these lessons.

Good reminder information. I don't worry much about fair housing, because I work in green housing. In other words if a client comes to me and wants any house anywhere, and can pay for it I am going to sell it to them! I am too greedy to do otherwise
