Do you have your priorities straight?

Since we all have the same amount of time, we should focus on making the most of what time we have.  Benjamin Franklin said it wonderfully when he said the following:

"Dost thou love life?
Then do not squander time,
for that is the stuff life is made of."

Sometimes I think we have to take a moment to think about what is most dear to us and make sure we rank this high on what is addressed during the day.  As Realtors, I think it is very important to set aside time that is special to our family.  For example, if we have children and they are involved in a special events we need to schedule this as we would an appointment and not miss it for anything.  Actually, this should be even more important.

What is important to you?  Make sure you set some time aside for this activity.  Procrastinating will only create disappointment.

Dear Laura, your reminder about the need for us to establish priorities is very timely for me. I have been grappling with that internal struggle for quite a while- even before entering the real estate profession.  Your comment, "Procrastinating will only create disappointment," is right on target.

Sometimes when I lighten up a little and allow the world to flow naturally, I become more open to new ideas and opportunities.  On the other hand, when I am driven to succeed regardless of the personal cost, my world becomes confined and narrow.  Does this happen to you?

Laura - Good point on making sure we use our time wisely.  However, don't you feel like our culture is consumed with time?  We are so slammed all the time. It seems like people had more time in Ben Franklin's day than we do.

Kevin:  I do think we try to pack too much in a day instead of being able to enjoy each other's company or take some time for reflection.  With cell phones, fax machines, email, etc.... we are able to move information quicker and thus are able to accomplish more things quickly.  However, we will never be able to retrieve the time we lose with our friends and family if we don't take it.  Quality of time is often even more important than quantity.  When you are with those you care about turn off the phone, t.v., and other distractions and put your full attention on them.  After all, that is why we all do so many of the things we do is for those we care about and love.

Hi Roseann, It is hard to achieve a balance between family and work sometimes.  That is why I think it is so important to schedule time for the things we hold dear.   Sometimes you even need to schedule time alone to reflect on things in your life.  Thanks for sharing.

My father in all my school years only missed 4 events of mine and those were at places he couldn't possibly have attended. One was in China, Hong Kong, Idaho and Canada and now I have done the same with my kids and do everything in my power not to miss an event.

The only way I will miss an event is if I'm at one of the other kid's events and I rotate which events I attend so not to see one child's events more than anothers.

Reflecting on our priorities is the easy part.  To follow through with action on a consistent basis is the challenge.  Thanks for the post, Laura!
