RosemaryI wanted to share with you a handwritten letter I got from my sponsor child in Uganda today.  My scanner does not work, so I can't put his picture here, but I will include pictures of other kids who need help.  His name is PaPa Ntege (I've been told the N is probably silent) and he lives in Uganda.  I sponsor him through ChildrenOfGrace.org.  Here's his letter:

"Dear Fisher
Praise the living God,

It's me PaPa Ntege trying to raive alot of thanks to you because of the help you're providing to me.  I am actually very grateful because I was really in need of your help.  I pray that God rewards you abanduntly because you have shown alot of love to me.

Your loving son
PaPa Ntege."

How sweet is that!!

FredChildren of Grace was founded by Mary Ann McCoy, a woman who lives near me.  Here is her statement:

On my first trip to Africa in 2001, I met a lovely young Ugandan mother named Grace. Her husband had died of AIDS and consequently Grace was HIV positive. She struggled to provide for her three children and feared for their future after she died.

"Who will pay their school fees? Who will provide food, clothing and health care? Who is going to take care of them and who is going to love them?"

Today, in honor and memory of Grace, Children of Grace provides hope, love, education, and a future to hundreds of orphaned children affected by HIV/AIDS in Uganda.

I received a letter from Children of Grace recently that said they are planning another visit to check on the children and the school.  They are asking for videos of the sponsor families to show to the kids so they can see who is caring for them.  They also said, if possible, they would return with video messages from our specific sponsor child.  That seems really cool to me.

I'm feeling happy today thanks to PaPa's letter, so I thought I would share with the rest of Active Rain.  Thanks for reading and have a wonderful day!

Chris, a wonderful letter. Thanks for sharing. The simplest of gratitude to you really just warms your heart.

Gary - it really does warm my heart.  The thought of sending him a personal video message is very exciting too.  What a world we're in right now, when we can reach people so far away.

The reward of the unselfish shall not go unrewarded. You will receive 100 fold back.

This is what our fore fathers and mothers preached to us growing up. It is the unselfish acts that warrant the return. And Chris, you are definitely an unselfish one.

Thanks for sharing your joy with us today.

Danny - wow, what kind words.  Thank you so much.  It was a really nice day because of this letter.  I forgot to bring it home, so I'll have to let Rhiannon read this blog when she gets home from grandpa day.

I watched a documentary which followed the story of an African woman who was mentored by a Canadian teacher in Africa. The student, now a grown woman is a successful nurse. She proudly reported that on her income she supports 16 people. Can you imagine how we'd complain about doing that?

Chris, the comments are well deserved. Thanks for being who you are.

Deborah - What a profound difference between feeling grateful that we can and feeling burdened because we have to.  To think it's just a difference in the way you look at something.

Danny - as always, you are totally kind.  Thank you again.

What a difference indeed Chris. We are so spoiled in the west, so out of tune - and so responsible for so much mess. Awesome that you are so proactive.

Awesome beautiful faces these children you've shown here! I once billetted some of the African Children's Choir when they were here - the children were so excited and eager to have school as they traveled from town to town!

Deborah - That must have been a lot of fun for them!  I know I've watched a couple of documentaries about the lost kids of Sudan and I just wanted to scoop them all up in a big hug and bring them home.  It's so overwhelming.

Chris, What a wonderful thing to do, sponsor a child.  I see those ads on TV and my heart breaks for all those children.  I did years ago sponsor a child and got updates and photos which I loved.  Congratulations on really doing something to help!

Chris - What a difference you've been able to make in the life of a child.  There's nothing more important than starting a ripple in the pond that may impact so many lives beyond what you can even imagine. Best wishes for PaPa's good health and happiness.

Carole - Yes, it's so fun to get the little letters in their own writing.  PaPa's was even in English.  I get letters from my sponsor child in Guatemala, hers are in Spanish and there's a translation included.  I just love the updates and information about them.

Lynn - Thank you so much.  I get a lot of joy from helping children when I can.  I was happy to have the income to add PaPa to my monthly budget.  Soon as I can I'm going to choose one of the girls above, as they've been on the list since I started sponsoring PaPa.

happy about PaPa

I sponsor an Indian child through Compassion and I love that every letter he writes begins with "Dear Beloved Sponsor" and ends with, "Your loving child, Ganesan". Seeing as he's 7, I'm quite sure it's his translator putting in most of the text, but I love getting the letters all the same!

Carey - I love that too.  It's so sweet.  Our sponsor child in Guatemala is too young to write, so her older sister writes hers and then someone translates.  It's always fun to get a letter and a little drawing.

This sounds like a wonderful organization to be associated with. I am sure that the letter from your sponsor child really warmed your already warm and generous heart! I would like to suggest that you submit this charity to Charity Navigator for inclusion as many people use Charity Navigator as a tool to determine where to donate money (even large corporate donors).

Great idea Rich, I'll do that now.

I really do like getting the letters from my sponsored kids.  I have Rhiannon write them letters back, too.  It would be REALLY nice to go visit sometime, but that's when I have time off and $.  I've been working 7 days a week lately.  : )

Chris - I submit all kinds of charities to them; it is worth the effort as it could help to secure more donations for a charity you obviously love! Africa has always been a dream of mine too! But alas the time and money issues always creeps in! I hope that when I die I don't have money and regret left over! Grim thought and I need to heed my own advice! I think that this may have to be my next BIG adventure!

Rich - Since I have extended family in Africa (and Guatemala) now, maybe it'll make the decision a little easier.
