Mid Maryland is a history buff's dream come true. Maryland's Civil War Trails have something for everyone. Some of the most decisive battles and skirmishes were fought in Mid Maryland which led to the epic battle in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania , just over the Mason Dixon Line. To honor the heritage five states have put together unique trails with an extensive number of historical points of interest. Along the historical routes you will find local food, drinks and places to hike , bike and river sports such as kayaking, canoeing and tubing.

Mid Maryland includes two of the six trails in the state.

The Antietam Campaign Trail has stops on South Mountain where you will find the first Washington Monument, Hagerstown , Sharpsburg and the Antietam National Battle Field . During the 4th of July they have an incredible fireworks display at the battlefield.  Other side trips along the trail include White's Ferry which you can cross the Potomac River in your car to Virginia.  The C&O Canal toe path offers hiking & biking and links to the Appalachian trail. At one point on the C&O Canal you can cross a rail road bridge over the Potomac to the historic town of Harpers Ferry which is part of the National ParkHarpers Ferry Brewing is a nice spot to take in a craft beer, they also have food trucks and live music with a fantastic view over looking the Potomac River at the mouth of the Harpers Ferry gap.

The Gettysburg Trail takes you through downtown Historic Frederick where you will find the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. It also takes you to downtown Hagerstown which like Frederick offers a thriving cultural arts scene and many fabulous restaurants.

Whether you are visiting the area or live near by the Civil War Trails provide an adventure for the entire family and offers something for everyone.

Civil War history is fascinating.  Maryland and our neighboring state of Virginia have so much history to share.

Hi Buzz- when we lived for a short time in Leesburg, VA, we took advantage of our time there and traveled to many Civil War trails and sites. It was an education that you can't get in a classroom.

As a West Coast gal, I don't get a lot of opportunity to visit Civil War sites.  However, several years ago, I visited Gettysburg right after sun up.  I was alone, and it was hauntingly beautiful.  Your Mid Maryland Civil War Trails are stunningly beautiful, Buzz.

Hello Buzz - There's not many opportunities to see the word skirmishes in a post these days though tug-of-wars of all varieties seem quite common.  I enjoyed this look at Maryland history.
