PREPLANNING FOR THE 2008 HURRICANE SEASON

The hurricane season is once again upon us here in the Wiregrass area.  This particular area includes:  Enterprise Alabama, Fort Rucker area, Daleville AL, Ozark, New Brockton, Elba, Level Plains, Clayhatchee, Dothan and any nearby surrounding areas. Preplanning for a hurricane emergency can provide comfort for you and your family as well as protect property and ultimately saving lives.

Stocking a "Hurricane Locker" with emergency food and water before a hurricane season is highly recommended.  You will also avoid the last minute panic buying that causes long lines and limited supplies of hurricane items at your local grocery stores and the Fort Rucker Commissary

Below you will find time saving tips and advice for Preplanning for the "Hurricane Season 2008" while living in the Fort Rucker area, Enterprise AL and the Surrounding Wiregrass Community:

  1. Stock ahead.  Plan at least 1 full meal a day.  2-3 days of supplies (H20, snacks, candles, charcoal & lighter fluid, etc.)
  2. Keep adequate supply of water, juices and other beverages on hand.
  3. Pre-stock foods that meet energy needs and provide protein (peanuts, granola bars, dried fruit, tuna, etc.)
  4. Keep food in dry, cool place in the home.  Inspect and rotate food at least 2 times a year.
  5. Keep food such as sugar, cereal, and dried fruit in airtight containers.
  6. Keep on hand canned foods.
  7. Purchase a manual can opener, flashlights, portable radio, batteries and candles.
  8. Buy bleach.  It can be used to sanitize as well as make water potable.
  9. If you do not have a gas grill, get charcoal and lighter fluid.

Michelle,

That is a very impressive list.  We have bad storms here and may get the tail end of a hurrucane.  All of our Northern Virginia bases - Fort Belvoir, Marine Corps Base Quantico and Arlington Hall have a good supply of storm supplies,  Karen

Karen:  Thank you for the comment.  This is the first time I have lived anywhere that this was a concern or possibility. Down here in Alabama - we have tornado's and hurricanes to worry about.  I took an inventory and found that the simple things I do not even have.  We use rechargeable batteries, but they would not help if we are out of electricity, which would result in no flashlights.  I got one of those LCD flashlights and a propane lantern as well. How is the weather up your way?  We have had some bad thunderstorms - resulting in some warnings.

Marie: I figured with all the tornado warnings this information would be very helpful to people who have never lived in this area before.  Thank you.
