Tattoos in the work place

By

There was an article on CNN.comtoday about tattoos in the work place. They were talking about how they are more acceptable then they have ever been, but they are still taboo in the work place in most fields. They talk about the lengths that people will go to cover them up. They even talked a little bit about double standards. The girl that they interviewed in the article worked as a project manager in construction. She went to job sites were the workers she was in charge of had tattoos, but she had to cover hers because of her position.

Now I ask this, what is your view on tattoos in the work place? How are they viewed in the Real Estate world? I have 2, but both in are in places that are easily covered. When I got them, I got them later in life and was very careful where they were because of how they could be viewed.

Anyway I thought it very interesting and just wanted to see what the view was out there. BTW check out www.inkedinc.com it is a website that is devoted to professionals that have tattoos and uncovering them for the camera.

I think that personality has a lot to do with the acceptance of such things. My wife has 4 tatoos, her nose pierced, her tongue pierced and still was a great top agent in her day .. before we had kids and she became a stay at home mom. I am sure some judged her, but once she opened her mouth and started talking her knowledge and passion for her job and life sort of cancelled it out. I watched it a hundred times. Her personality is such that people just see those things as part of her. She is not a grundge type person, dresses very nicely, is very beautiful and classy looking and her piercing just add to her beauty. We should not judge a book by it's cover.

Crystal:  I am guessing that it depends quite a bit on the type of business you are working in.  For example, a bank or a doctor's office... as opposed to the girl who was a construction project manager.  I cannot understand why they would object to her having a tattoo... I'd think it was pretty common, or at least not out of place in that kind of business.

And... if a guy in her position was allowed to have one, there is not reason whatsoever why a woman could not.

Tattoos are fairly common here in our area. The Pacific Northwest is a pretty casual area anyway (think Bill Gates). Not sure that it is much of an issue. For the record neither of us have any...we are both afraid of needles.

I still think that tattoo's in the professional work place is still looked down upon, My 20 something son and I recently had a discussion on this very topic, and he feels it is acceptable,  many professionals I know stick to smaller tats or hidden tats, In a way if you really want to climb the corporate ladder you need to be ready to conform to the status quo,

I have one.. would I do it over.. I doubt it.. In the work place it's tough. It still has a stigma attached to it for some people.

In real estate and finance, it will be while before it's not considered an obstacle to success and acceptance.

When I worked at the bank they were not allowed to be visible.  One teller had a tattoo on the top of her hand and would cover it by wrapping a giant ace bandage on her hand.  lol  She spent the day answering the same  question from the customers - " What did you to your hand, honey?"

I love that website!!!! That is really neat idea the book. I know several people who have tattoos and they try to keep them under wraps until they let their hair down. I think it is a southern thing.
