Charles Leiper Grigg was born in Prices Branch, Missouri back in 1868 to Charles and Mary.  When he turned 22 he moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he began working in the advertising field. By 1919, he was working as a salesman for a manufacturing company owned by Vess Jonea.

While working with Jonea he invented and marketed his first soft drink called “Whistle”.  The success of the drink led to his promotion to the marketing manager, however he and Jonea did not get along, he left the company, leaving Whistle behind. Later we worked with the Warner Jenkinson Company developing flavoring agents for soft drinks.  In 1929, he developed his second soft drink which made him a wealthy man.  He died in 1940 in St. Louis he was 71.

Some of you may like to know what his second soft drink was called, well I’m so glad you asked, maybe you’ve heard of it 7 Up.

Hello James - admittedly, I am not a soft drink aficionado but have obviously heard of 7-Up.  Some collaborations don't "whet your whistle" but it's good to know, success often waits for the right opportunity.

Hmm, I have heard that 7-Up calms an upset stomach, haha.  I don't drink soda these days but I drank way too much of it when I was young.

7Up has always been my favorite pop James Dray although it's been many years since I've had one. Thanks for "the rest of the story".

Hi again, James... I haven't had a 7Up in years; actually maybe decades. But I did use to like it... I just don't drink much in the way of carbonated drinks anymore except for an occasional diet coke. I enjoyed reading about the history of this iconic drink.

Good morning James - oh yes, that is one of the staple drinks in hospitality maybe next to Coke or Pepsi.

Good morning James,

A popular mixture with whiskey and I have learned how to drink the whiskey straight or on the rockes!

Make yourself an awesome day.

James,

I cannot even recall the last time I had a 7up.  It was the antidote to Coca cola for many. Happy Wednesday.  A

Hi James- like many I used to drink Coco-cola and being a Texan, an occasional Dr. Pepper. I know of 7 Up too. I guess I haven"t had a soda in too many years to count.

Sounds like he definitely found his calling James. There's a drink called 7 & 7, 7up & Seagram's 7. I hear that it's quite good 😉
