Just One Of A Few Billion.. Cicadalicious?!

They are heeeerrreee! The Brood X is emerging and living in Maryland means: there's no escaping that army of creepy zombie bugs. I can't say that I find them beautiful but they are definitely fascinating. I alternate between oh that is so gross and I can't look away. I remember the last emergence and how relieved I was when they finally disappeared. 17 years sure flew by.

According to some (who are you people?), cicadas make for a nutritious treat: rich in protein, low-carb, low-fat and gluten free! If that fits your diet and you are feeling adventurous, you can turn them into soup, or cookies, or add them to a skewer and grill'em, or make spicy popcorn cicadas.

There's a book for that, published in 2004 by Jenna Jadin and the University of Maryland Cicadamaniacs: Cicada-licious.

Would you try one?*

Hi Andrea - OMG I have never heard of them and the thought of eating insects really repulses me.

I assumed you would see your share up in NY as well Grant!

Same!!

Correction after looking at this map. Your area saw a brook emergence in 2013. Don't come to MD in the next few weeks Grant Schneider. It's an invasion for sure.

Hello Andrea - as for trying any cicada culinary taste tests - I think I'll pass.  Maybe in another seventeen years.  Maybe. . .

Oh my, probably about 7 or 8 years ago, cicadas were very active in my part of NY. They were everywhere. My husband and his son went for a hike in the woods and they said the walk was crunchy. ICCCKKK

Just looked at the map and it looks like 2013 was a good one in your old stomping grounds Kat.

That was me today, flicking them off my arm and foot.. and I'm over it.

It sounds like you won't be serving chocolate-covered cicadas anytime soon, am I right?  As you have it pictured, it certainly is a fascinating-looking creature!

NOOOOPPPE. No cicada-anything Brian England! I'm good! As a matter of fact, I may have to get a full-body suit after I had a few crawl on me and get caught in my hair today. Ewwww.

Andrea, all I can say --- GLAD they don't come to Denver!   I have heard them elsewhere!

If I wasn't so wonderfully busy with my clients, I'd flee Maryland for the next few weeks Joan. Denver sounds lovely!

I would assume that when they get to 'talking' in the early evening hours that the sound can be quite loud.

Very much so Ed! I wonder what they talk about? It's a good thing that this invasion only lasts a few weeks - and won't happen for another 17 years or so!

Andrea Bedard Cicadas for food would go right in the same column as kale for the two of us.  By mistake, I bought a box of kale thinking it was arugula, and quickly gave it to our neighbor who not only loves the stuff, but has it planted in her garden.  A

Hi Andrea- We moved to Leesburg, VA 17 years ago and our agent warned us that it was going to be the year of the cicadas. She wasn't wrong!!! I don't think I'd want to eat them.

I moved to Maryland 17 years ago and experienced that same brood emergence Kathy. It was a lot.
