The Carolinas Remain Top Destination States For Relocating Americans

People have continued to move to the Greater Charlotte area in large numbers despite the pandemic. According to TaxFoundation.org, North Carolina and South Carolina were in the top 10 inbound states in 2020, ranked #6 and #2 respectively.

In 2020 during the height of the pandemic Curbed.com named Charlotte one of the top 10 destination cities for people wanting to relocate. As we enter a post-pandemic phase, more than 120 people are still moving to the Greater Charlotte region each day, making Charlotte one of the fastest growing cities in the nation.

WHY SO MANY PEOPLE ARE MOVING TO THE GREATER CHARLOTTE AREA IN THE CAROLINAS

People are moving here for jobs, for a lower cost of living, lower taxes, more space, less density, better quality of life, to follow children to be closer to grandchildren. The Charlotte region ranks #1 for baby boomers who've chosen to retire close to their grandchildren, according to Meyers Research. In fact, these baby boomers now have a new name -- "baby chasers." Because Charlotte is one of the top cities in the nation attracting millennials, it's become a top destination city for the parents of those millennials.

Business climate also plays a big role in why people are moving to the Greater Charlotte region. North Carolina is ranked in the top 10 states with the best business tax climate according to TaxFoundation.org.

Dorie Dillard Austin TX hi Dorie... we left NYC 22 years ago and we've never looked back. Reflecting on it now, it was an excellent decision. We know quite a few people here who were "baby chasers," who are in the 60's and 70's and who moved here because kids and grandkids lived here.

Brian England hi Brian... if I were to leave the Carolinas, Arizona would probably be first on my list. In fact when we started looking in Charlotte as a place to set down roots, we considered Arizona... it was just too far away... we both had family in Europe and I had family in NYC. Didn't want to have to travel all that far to get to them. Now, of course, almost no one is left except my family in Russia... but it's too late to change course after more than 20 years here.

Michael Jacobs hi Michael... we also considered the Triangle when we were looking at the Charlotte region in 1988... but felt we wanted to be in a somewhat warmer climate and close to an International Airport.

Nina the Carolinas have a lot to offer, so I am not surprised they are in the top end of the relocation inbound list.  I am also not surprised Connecticut is at the bottom end of the outbound list.

Endre Barath, Jr. good morning, Endre... I'l be the first to say I didn't think I'd ever leave NYC after we moved back from overseas... and look what happened. Best move I ever made was to Charlotte. And with everything happening in NYC in the past years and since the pandemic has only underscored the fact that it was the best move I ever made.
