Hooey, Hoopla And Hey. . .

Hooey, Hoopla And Hey

Or Is It Hay?  Either Way. . .

Hooey isn’t a word one hears much these days.  In fact, you might not know it at all but it recently came to mind in the scope of a discussion of events taking place somewhere or sometime which is kinda like the nonsense definition provided by Merriam Webster.  Of course, the urban dictionary goes a bit further but this is a family friendly forum.  Well, more or less.  I digress. . .

This leads me to hoopla.  While hooey might lead to hoopla the alliterative activity attributes of the word make it fun to add nonetheless.  So that’s important, right?  Well, it works for me.

And then there’s hey.  It seems it has become the salutation of choice for some in communication these days.  At least, it’s one I have noticed.  And certainly one that’s more than slightly annoying to me.  In the last few days, I received multiple text messages from people unknown to me that start with “Hey. ..”.  Over the years, I have seen a similar tactic used in business email communications as well.  It’s not that formal is the only acceptable method of conveyance ofbut “hey” I think I have a point.

More likely than not, both the email and the text message will be deleted or ignored.  After all, hay is for horses and “hey” has its place too.  And it’s not in my world of communication.

Michael,

You have me laughing at your comment.  I am going to tell Ron to respond to those emails with a Dr. Seuss comment, Horton Hears A Hooey....I love it.

Michael Jacobs - A funny thing happened to me when I moved to TX. New friends were always sending me emails (text didn't exist back then) and their salutations always started with, "Hey, Patricia!" I thought it was odd and didn't accept addressing someone who addresses me with a "hey." I started noticing I got hee hoed and ignored, so I consulted with a co-worker who also came from Chicago. When I confided in her about my concerns, she explained to me it's an acceptable Southern way of life to address friends like that and I shouldn't be offended, but thrilled to know they were accepting me into their circle of life. Now, if a client starts out with "Hey Patricia," I answer back such as "Hey Michael!" As they say, when in Rome, do as the Roman's do...

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - this post has been (another) learning experience for me.  We know all real estate is local and language(along with so many other things) certainly has its own nuances.  Your "when in Rome comment, is hey-worthy.

Michael Jacobs - Moving to a state where I never lived before and had no relatives was a learning experiences for me too! I had no idea how different culture, language, food, and business attire was going to be - it was all very surprising. Prior to my move, the only time I said hey was when I sang, "Hey, Hey, We're the Monkeys!"

Morning Michael.

Hey, hay or hoopla, it's all the same to me.  Won't open or reply to any messages or emails that start with those words.

Wanda Kubat-Nerdin - Wanda Can! - I was a smart @$$ as a child(some traits seem to exist far beyond adolescence as I have learned) so when I heard the "you weren't raised in a barn"remark I replied once(but only once) "what about baby Jesus?".  Yeah, I only said it once.  Once was enough.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel - let me know how reaction if Ron tries it. . .

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - I remember moving to Washington DC and discovering how Southern the city is in many ways.  One vivid memory was I was working in a different environment where I could hear people answering phone calls but could not quite understand what they were saying.  I asked a work associate who smiled and told me "they are saying, Michael Jacobs' office who may I say is calling?".   Lesson learned - listen for the nuances in language.

James Dray - works for me.

Michael, sure looks like the HEY is used more in the South, but totally more casual, and shouldn't be used in business.

I often wonder how words are crafted. John Lennon wrote a book in the early 1960s called "In his own write" really amazing wordplay.

Hi Michael Jacobs, you have no idea how annoyed I get when I receive an email or a text that starts with a "hey". I never heard this living in NY, however, in FL, it is acceptable(not by me).

Hey Beth Atalay(err I mean Hello) - that's one of the lessons I learned from the comments received on this post as well as generally time spent "aware".

What can I say?  Should I say "No Problem" --- or perhaps some other new regional response. . .

Thank you for the highlight within the BananaTude Group.  I appreciate it.

The other day my daughter and the kids and I visited my elderly parents. My dad has a walker. Zack was "playing" with it and started impersonating an old man. It was quite humourous and my parents enjoyed it. One of the the things he said was "that's a lot of hooey sonny!". It really surprised me that an 11 year old knew the word!

Sharon Tara - it's interesting to hear(and see) what kids "pick up".  They are listening(and watching).  I know that's true for me so it shouldn't surprise anyone who was once a child, right?   I am sure there is a lot of hooey in your past. ..

I was going to start this comment out with the very informal, 'Hey, Michael,'and decided against it; followed information above;-}  I do remember in my childhood the two familiar words:  Hooey and Hoopla.  Brings back memories.

I found myself starting a text message to my brother last week, in an attempt to lighten the mood, with "Hey."  It's not something I would do with anyone I didn't know extremely well.  BTW, worked like a charm and got him to a happier zone in our conversation.

Dear Michael Jacobs --  'Hey, Michael,' so did I misread or misunderstand your post?!?  I have always looked on the salutation as one of lightness and friendliness' and just as Chris Ann Cleland commented:  setting a mood.   Just did not want to 'annoy' you.  I also recalled that I have greeted you with the 'Hey, Michael" in the past.  My dear friend, Michael, just set me straight on which you prefer....
Have a beautiful and also, fun evening.   Jane

Jane Chaulklin-Schott - absolutely not - it seems as if my attempt at humor was misinterpreted.  Once again.  No, I thought your comment was spot on and dovetailed into the comment by Chris Ann Cleland.  A good "pairing".  😃  I appreciate the comment even when my replies may be a bit quirky.

Sounds like what I thought is true -- we are good friends and I can, at times, just write: 'Hey, Michael.... Do I have that correct, Mr. Michael Jacobs :)
