Five Cushions, Five hundred Dollars

Five of the cushions in my little 1972 Scamp camper have been in really poor shape over the past few years so I decided this spring I was going to buckle under and "getter done" (reupholstered). I didn't even ask what it would cost as I knew it would be expensive. No one in town even advertises this service because they are all so swamped that they do not need to.

There was no way I was going to match the two remaining original 50 year old cushions (below).

I decided to go with something light and airy.

I think they look great and I can't wait to replace to two remaining cushions. Well... after the sticker shock maybe I can wait another year or two (after all they are on the other end of the camper.

Thanks for commenting Bill Salvatore - YVP Blog . I'm very pleased with the results and am eager to take it out camping soon.

Hello Bob - I wonder what the price of the entire camper was in 1972?  Prices are relative, right?  Enjoy the new upholstery and the many adventures yet-to-come.

WOW! I did not know this Nina Hollander, Broker . I never felt I was being over charged as Pam (Pam's Upholstery) walked me through the steps and I could easily see all the work that went into this project.

Bob "RealMan" Timm hi Bob... I didn't want to suggest that you overpaid... just that reupholstery work everywhere is very expensive... it's a lost art for the most part and very time intensive when done right.

That's a great question Michael Jacobs . I actually worked at a place that sold them in 1972 and I'm thinking it was under $5,000 but now I have to do a search on it.

Bob,

Upholstering and doing it right is an art that is time consuming and expensive.  When done right, it is worth it, and it looks like they did a great job.   A

Thanks Will Hamm . It was fun picking out the fabric for the cushions, I wanted something cheery. From the other comments I see reupholstery is expensive everywhere.

Think of the last time you bought any and divide the years by the cost, it gets cheaper that way

Bob - I remember having a favorite chair reupholstered. It would have been less expensive to buy a new chair!!!

Morning Bob.

With the age of the Scamp, and the cost, go for it.

Plenty of people around here are willing to take on the job, however, I only have one whose quality I can trust. Yes, it is somewhat expensive initially, especially for the boat, but the result is unmatched. Who's the happy camper now RealMan? You are!

I do that all the time Ed Silva . I even do it when I'm about to purchase something to get an idea if I'm going to get my moneys worth out of it.

Thanks Kathy Streib I kind of got that same message from Nina Hollander, Broker comment. If it wasn't a vintage and sought after camper I'd consider trading up.

I love that "Happy Camper" line Kevin J. May 😄. BTW she told me that she is trying to keep up with all the orders for boat seat cushions.
