Elton John is a performer that needs no introduction, unless you refer to him as Reginald Dwight, his birth name. He is one of the mostly widely known and loved artists around. When it comes to choosing an Elton John song, I had a lot to choose from. I chose one of Elton’s earlier creations.
The song I chose is “Your Song.” Written by Bernie Taupin. It is hard to believe that this huge hit was the “B” side of the single Take Me to the Pilot.
There have been a number of different stories as to the inspiration for the song. But Taupin claims the words simply came to him when he was sitting a Elton John’s kitchen table. “That’s it. Plain and Simple.”
This song has some personal significance. I was a young man who had just gotten my first really good job and to reward myself I bought a new component stereo system. I brought it home hooked up the wires and turned it on. When I tuned to my favorite station, this was the first song I heard.
About ten years later I saw Elton John in concert at the Chicago Stadium.
Our video today was recorded in 1971, in the video you see a young Elton. Over time his act and his costumes became more and more flamboyant.
The number of awards John has received would require a paragraph of its own. Two of the more significant ones include his being knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1998 and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
So, for anyone that wants their own song, here you go. It is “Your Song”.
