This is just a gentle reminder to please leave your business card when you have been in a home for a showing.  One of my listings is a young couple, a stay-at-home mom with a two-year old.  She's very sweet and obliging, always leaving the house for the showing - no small task when rounding up the little one.  She has not once mentioned being inconvenienced even if it's nap time or dinner time.  We have had a lot of showings, but unfortunately only about 2 or 3 out of 10 have been leaving their card.  She'll come back home and call me to see if the agent has been there, asking if she should go back out.  I recognize that these are tough times and many of us are tired....but we are the professionals, and must remember to conduct ourselves as such.  Forgetting to leave a card may seem like a small thing to us, but it's not a small thing for this mother.  Thanks, I needed to get this off my mind.

Gail, great reminder!  I can see how this young mother could become frustrated with our profession, it is such a simple thing to do.

Thanks Tony & Darcy - Her nature is very accommodating, her house is always spotless.  She goes out of her way for us, I just want her to be appreciated and treated well.

It is just common curtousy!

I have a house listed currently that is vacant. I entered it in MLS with showing instructions as "LB Vacant - Call and Go" so that I could follow up on showings. I went out a few days ago and found several cards inside from agents that had not bothered to call. At least they did bother to leave a card.

Hi Keith - I think that happens everywhere but doesn't make it right.  In our MLS we tend not to indicate that the home is vacant.  We're having a"copper-robber" issue....what next!  A suggestion for you (if you've not already done this) is to register your electronic lockboxes with KIM.  That way you'll be sure of a notification of who entered and when.  If I see an agent did not call to advise me, I'll pick up the phone and very nicely ask for feedback.  Hey - thanks for popping in :-) good comment.

A great reminder Gail. A lot of folks (especially the ones who've been doing it for awhile) don't leave their cards as much.

Klarque - interesting comment.  Maybe it's because I live and work in a pretty small town (45,000 people) but the old pros around here are usually really good about following all the proper protocal.  If I could pin it down, I'd say it's more the out-of-area agents who are not as diligent.  Guess they haven't learned how ornery we can be ;-)

I prefer you do NOT leave your card when you visit my listing. I don't want your business card left on my sellers counter.

So Ellie - Not a lot of trust or bonding going on there!  Since I've never met you, I have no way of knowing if you're being funny or not.  Assuming you are being serious, would you allow someone to enter your listing without telling the seller just WHO to expect?  I had an experience recently (my house is on the market) where a stranger knocked on my door pretending to have had an appointment.  It was a con!!!....she didn't know I was an owner/agent.  There's a lot more to it than that but the police were called and I put out a warning to our local agents to be aware of this person's "modus operandi".  I had several agents call to let me know something similar had occured with their sellers.  Hopefully - and collectively - we put this con artist out of business in Titusville.  I'm a big believer in transparency so why would I, or anyone, not inform the seller just WHO will be in their house?  Sorry - I respectfully disagree.

I totally agree with you on the card issue. We actually have rules that state you Have to leave them or you can get fined/reprimanded. I try to just for the listing agent/seller communication issue.

I have had another agent call me and ask me NOT to leave my card ever in her properties. Her reason? She said my card was "too good". It didn't look like a plain business card. It had my credentials and awards listed on the back--a short bio. The agent felt this was a solicitation of her property! It was my CARD for pete's sake.

Thanks for the reminder.  I try to remember to leave business cards when I show properties but sometimes I walk out without doing that, more often with the REO listings.  I'm going to make it a point to always leave my business card.

Patrick- I don't think our MLS imposes fines, but not leaving a card is surely frowned upon.

Erica - Like she wanted to sweep you under the rug - not likely!  Well, hopefully this agent went on to garner some designations of her own thereby increasing her own professional image.

Vicki - All of us can forget now and then, but it only takes another minute to open the house back up and drop one off.  On occasion, if my card is already there, I might not leave another especially if the house is vacant.  But I still let the listing agent know I'm going in, she may want to call for feedback.

Hi Gail - Thanks for your post.  I agree a card should be left.  I also believe a PILE of cards is not a great thing to see when you bring your buyer's through a home.  One of your readers referred me to your post.  For another angle on this topic, I'd refer you to Stack O' Business Cards on the Counter...What Does my Client Think?

Oh my goodness.....I had to do a double take and make sure I was on a Real Estate network and not the sesame street playground.....I just can not imagine an agent saying NOT to leave a card for any reason.  The example of the designations on the back tells a lot about the insecurities of some people in this field.  They have gotten the seller to believe they are the best for the job, and sounds like they don't want that seller to realize that they might not be :)   Yep....sounds like a whole lot of false egos in this do not leave your card at MY listing thing :)   Poor Sellers...........

Gail your points are valid.  I have a seller that calls me and gets very upset if someone showed their house and didn't leave a card.  They want me to call for feedback, but I can't without the card.

Kathy - couldn't agree with you more.  I always get name, company and phone number for all showings so I know how to reach the agent.  But sometimes things happen, the showing didn't occur and for whatever reason, I wasn't notified.  The card, or lack of, should both prompt for feedback.  All of my sellers' want feedback, every time (and they are entitled to it!)

The comment above about seeing so many cards and possible reactions to them is all in the handling.  I had one seller, very expensive home for my area; he never put the cards away.  In his mind it showed everyone how much activity he was getting because it was such a great house and you better buy soon 'cause someone else will.  This business is not "one size fits all" so best to fulfill each customers expectations/needs accordingly.

Spokane Washington Real Estate Expert I agree the seller likes to see the cards so they know who has been there. It is also a reminder of how many agents have seen their home. People should leave one. It also shows the other agent who is showing their listings, and for those cheapos people actually get listings because the seller will know ho showed the home with the previous agent.

Gail, I'm a guilty party.  I almost never remember to leave my card.  Thanks for the reminder, and I will try to remember more often.

Hey Ross - how did you do that......your photo with you post?  Thanks for stopping by, but now you have to tell us how???

Hi Bob - LOL maybe you don't have to leave a card since you're the king of Sun City and everybody knows you.  Nice niche market, I used to live in Lighthouse Point and know just where you are.

I always try to leave my card. If I don't happen to have one on me, I leave a pen.

Leaving a card is about as basic as you can get , but so important in so many ways! It is like being part of the football team and forgetting your equipment for the day.

I agree that you should always leave a card, especially at occupied listings.  We had many agents that came through our home and did not leave a card.  It was frustrating because we never knew whether we could relax or if they were just running late and would come running in any minute.  I have a showing service so even if people didn't leave a card at least I know who they are so I can still follow-up for feedback.

Sometimes I just forget.  I was showing a property last weekend and the agent had a bowl next to the listing sheet and a card that said "Please leave a card".  Then it hit me "Crap I did not leave a card at the last house".  I felt bad.

I thought the fishbowl was a good idea though, and it was a subtle reminder.

Hi Joe - good analogy

Stacy-Ann, you really know what I'm talking about.  You hit the nail on the head "It was frustrating because we never knew whether we could relax or if they were just running late and would come running in any minute."

Hey Chad - I like the idea of the fishbowl, that's an keeper :-)
