Wordless Wednesday...Watching Children Play

Something I think is so important is play... for children and for adults!

So if you’re reading this, I’m presuming that you’re past the child stage of your life and you can organize your own form of play.

But for children, play is crucial to their development. Besides wearing them out before their bedtime, play is how they learn...it helps to develop their creativity and imagination.

We had family over on Sunday and with the many toys that their grandmother brought over, little Raffe was more interested in the fire hydrant in front of our house.

He explained to his grandmother and cousin the purpose of the hydrant, where the hose went, and some creative ideas about other parts of the hydrant and their function.

If you get the chance to watch children at play...stop and enjoy it!!  It’s worth your time.

Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood. Fred Rogers

Give a child a big box and  watch their imagination. Video and phones are stifling them.

Kathy,

I agree with all the commenters.  I am happy that my parents were not toy givers, we went places like to the mountains in the summer where I could climb trees and explore, and to a cabin by the Mediterannean sea.  It was all about exploring the great outdoors. A

All I remember is playing outside all day, even in hot and humid south Louisiana. I guess I could take the heat and humidity better as a kid.

Kathy I am still trying to figure out what to do when I grow up, so I guess I need to play a little more.

Nina Hollander, Broker I agree and the toys I prefer to give are the ones that will stimulate their creativity.

Wayne Martin just think of what we would have become had we not been exposed to play when we were children.

Michael Jacobs He loves dump trucks and all sorts of construction equipment and has so much energy it's tiring just to watch him.

Ed Silva I remember watching my friend's daughter take all of her mom's pots and pans out and start playing with them. Her toys sat in the next room.

Kat Palmiotti I had a similar childhood. My cousins and I spent all day playing outside. We made up our own games and didn't come inside until it was time for dinner.

faye schubert I couldn't agree more!  I used to save any big box I got for my nieces and nephews.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel when I played with my dolls, I spent the day building their house with the books off the shelves. When I finished, I'd lost interest in playing with the dolls.

I don't blame Raffe for his interest in the fire hydrant.  I've often been amused at the creativity some artists have with hydrants.  I remember one especially, that had turned one into a hound dog, complete with pooch head.

Watching kids at work in their play environment is definitely wonderful.  I had a niece years ago that would sketch up things she wanted to invent.  It was unfettered creativity.
