Edwin Albert Link was born in Huntington, Indiana back in 1904 to Edwin and Katherine. The family moved to Binghamton, New York in 1910. He graduated for Binghamton Central High School. He took his first flying lesson in 1920. By 1927, he had his own Cessna and eked out a living barnstorming, providing charter flying and giving lessons.
He married Marion Clayton in 1931. Finally, in 1934, the United States Army Air Corps bought six of his inventions and as the say the rest is history.
What you may not know about Edwin is that he obtained more than 27 patents for the aeronautics, navigation and oceanographic industries. Maybe you’ve heard about a few of them. He invented the flight simulator which was what the United States Army Air Corps bought back in 1934, he was a pioneer in underwater archaeology and submersibles. In the 1950’s he developed several submersible decompression chambers. He died in 1981, he was 77.
