Motivational Monday...Seek To Be Enlightened
There was a time many moons ago when a friend and I were not seeing eye to eye about a subject. It wasn’t about anything life-threatening or earth-shattering, nor was it about the two taboo subjects...religion and politics.
She would not stop talking or debating (I’m being kind) long enough for me to say a word. At one point I wondered if she was talking to hear herself talk or just couldn’t stop...like those wind-up dolls.
The only reason I was in this conversation was to interact with her and maybe even to learn something.
For her it was a contest to win...win no matter what. And therein lies the problem.
We will never agree with everyone about everything. And that’s a good thing. We can use our differences of opinion as an opportunity to enlighten ourselves...to learn something...to grow...to solve a problem.
We also learn about the other person...how they view things, what motivates them.
Take your ego out of the disagreement. Listen and see what you might learn. And do not view it as a win or lose situation.
The aim of argument, or of discussion, should not be victory, but progress.
